Who says we don't learn anything from the Movies

What some have learned

According to one person (who is deceased I might add) "It's the movies that have really been running things in America ever since they were invented. They show you what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how to feel about it, and how to look how you feel about it."

That quote was made by Andy Warhol. Does anyone remember him? How can we not?! He was also the person who coined "five minutes of fame" and made quite a memorable contribution in the art and design world.

One thing I know movies do, apart from taking you visually and sometimes mentally to other parts of the world or the universe, it does capture the reality of life, most of the times. And there are times when some movies are so innovative they are way a head of us!

I will always be a big movie and television fan. Some people say that the small screen and hollywood in general corrupts our world but I have to disagree with them. There have been so many lessons learned from watching a documentary, a favorite show or program. Sure there are programs that are just nonsense and totally useless to some of us, but it's up to you to weed out the good from the bad, the one that does make a difference, to the one that scares the heck out of you with it's depiction of nightmarish ideas or ideals.


Movies are here to stay and I'm definately happy about that!

I think his quote was 15 minutes of fame, but I may be wrong.

Sidney and Francis Lewis, former owners of the largest Catalog Showroom chain (now a defunct industry) were major art patrons, and had some of his Campbell soup pictures hanging in the lobby of their headquarters back in the 80s.  I could never see what fuss was about them.

From Star Wars "Phantom Menace"  I've tried to learn " your focus becomes your reality" and something about the "living present"  or living in the moment.

Also "fear leads to anger,  anger to hate and hate leads to suffering."

Movies like Fantasia,  the original,   kindles my creativity fire and Seabiscuit encourages me to keep on trying!

You're probably right Doc! I think I messed up on that!


I could never see what fuss was about them.


I guess because they were so unusual. No one did art like that in those days. NOW his work is copied by so many.

There was a line from, The Shawshank Redemption. Something along the lines of, "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things..."

I always liked the movie, and that line. I think it reigns true, and is good to remember.

Yes I agree there is a world of things to learn from the movies - just find the right ones. My favorie movies are "The Wizard of Oz" and "Goodfellas." Both are stories that are journeys of personal revelation - the transformation goes in opposite directions in these films, but as in all good art, repeated exposure brings newer levels of awareness.

Yes. Knowing which movie you actually learn something from is key.
My favorie movies are "The Wizard of Oz" and "Goodfellas." Both are stories that are journeys of personal revelation - the transformation goes in opposite directions in these films, but as in all good art, repeated exposure brings newer levels of awareness.


Good choices Mr. Moskowitz. I never looked at Goodfellas in that way, but you're right!

I remember mentioning on your previous thread that I don't watch TV & movies anymore because of all the offensive material they throw in our faces.

My good / bad filter seems to be broken. I seem to soak in all the bad things but the good doesn't stick as much. The bad stuff just lingers in my head and often affects my moods and actions.

But you're among the millions of normal folks whose brain filters are strong and active. Lucky you!

True, there are a lot of wonderful things in the general media, but I just don't have the strength to wade through it anymore and consciously decide what's good or bad. Also too often in the midst of a good program they'll intermingle some awful thing that really ruins it.

I'm fragile like that.

So instead I try to stay busy with my family, surround myself with uplifting music & books. And for those times I'm dying to veg-out in front of the TV (but can't because I don't have one) I tune into BYUtv.org on the computer, and I always emerging in a better mood afterwards because there are nothing but GOOD things on there! It's educational, entertaining, relaxing, uplifting. What I wish all the media could be.

As for the harsher side of life, I've always got plenty of reality to deal with...and Joe User! ::

I know what you mean. The other day I was watching tv with my kids and lo and behold, some ad that was totally inappropriate came on! In the middle of the dinner time viewing! I was p.o. about it! I switch the station but not fast enough before the crap came on.

That's why I talk to my kids to let them know what's not appropriate and they understand. Now when they see anything that they know they shouldn't watch, they switch the channel, leave the room or cover their ears and eyes which is so cute that they do that! So respectful of them!



BYUtv.org on the computer, and I always emerging in a better mood afterwards because there are nothing but GOOD things on there! It's educational, entertaining, relaxing, uplifting. What I wish all the media could be.

Ooh, there's something boring on right now though. Men in suits discussing the scriptures. (Forgot to mention that it's a religious channel   ) But there are often things on there so down-to-earth and beautiful it just makes me cry. In a happy, soul-enlightening way
