No, it was still the same topic, just with a different view and definition.

You never specified what definition you meant, so by defacto rules of debate I could have used any definition I wanted.

it would be if your definition was not so grossely different.
you defined hierarchy as a bunch of people in a line all begging to one man, thats a completely different topic from a bunch of equally begging at each other men in a bunch of parralel and convergant lines.
You never specified what definition you meant, so by defacto rules of debate I could have used any definition I wanted.

not if the usage is perfectly clear. if I was vague in which definition I meant (which, note I wasn't) then this defacto rule would hold.
