This is the first non-Dell I’ve had as my main office machine in years. And by years, I mean as far back as I can remember. But the new Dell XPS 730X doesn’t come with more than 6GB of RAM and I wanted more than that so I went to iBuyPower to get it. I’m still a huge fan of Dell and Alienware but I wanted those 12GB.
We’ve installed Windows 7 on it and the machine is just a total monster. It nearly 3 times faster than the monster Alienware box I got last Summer for home.

I am still in the process of updating the other base components. Gotta check in with AMD for the latest ATI card to put in here. I got a 4800 in it right now.
I’m waiting until Windows 7 to get an SSD drive. With 12GB of memory and the fact I never reboot (or very rarely) means that everything I might possibly do on the machine will get cached. I’ve learned that from my ThinkPad T400. 64-bit with lots of RAM trumps SSDs in terms of day to day performance.
Love the case too.
The case is pretty tacky. But it is quite functional. I wish the Dell XPS line would adopt having more of the goodies accessible like this. My only gripe is that there’s no SD card reader slot up here.
The multi-card reader is where the floppy drive used to be in these things years ago. The CD/DVD/Blu Ray burner/reader is up where it would normally be.
In terms of benchmarks, it scored a 2014 which is almost 3 times faster than the Alienware box from this past Summer which had one of those Intel extreme whatevers in it (it was the fastest thing I could buy at the time).
Any overclock on the machine?
I doubt I could live with its looks.....
My idea of an attractive case is a simple understated Lian Li brushed aluminium one.
Function defines form.
But.....the specs on the other hand.....something I'd be 'wanting'...
well, i like a little bling, but cheap plastic is to bling as the BB guns are to the M198 Howitzer.
Lian Li's are nice, but if you have the money (and connections), it's Windy FTW.

i just ordered a silverstone ft01b-w today. it'll replace my lian-li 1200b. both are great cases but after building a few cases for customers using that silverstone in the last few weeks, i decided i had to have one myself. someday, i'll put a i7 setup in it but not until the prices of the cpu's come down some.

BTW - You need to try harder to come up with something that will push that system - Sins only maxs my RAM usage on Vista 64Ultimate at about 30-33% - though I do have 8GB...

That's a damn beefy machine, Brad. Certainly trumps mine. Except for the case, of course.
I was won over by the understated style that the Antec P182 Performance One offered. Though it looks simple and plain on the outside, it manages to do that with flair, but its innards are highly configurable and well laid out. It is well built and sturdier than any case I've ever owned and laid hands on.
I would highly recommend this to anyone building a PC.
I have a P182 - nice case - removeable air filters, removable HD cages and rubber hose holes for water cooling if so inclined, plus really good ventilation to boot...
Concider yourself officially hated....

Intereting case, when I build my own new PC I'll consider using that case but might not because I'm planning on building make my own case made out of Legos.
The case makes the paint peel from my wall but it's extremely functional. I love the ports and other connections being on the top facing up.
The recently bought Acer AM5640-E5408A has a nice tiny curvy blueish flashy off button.
Some blinking HD_Net cues also in matching sharp azur blues.

Brad, how much noise does that computer make while running? Not a measurement of course, just a quick comment about it if you don't mind.
Or anyone else feel free to respond with whatever you feel is the absolute quietest case for building a high-powered rig. Would really appreciate it, haven't built a new computer myself in 4 or 5 years, think I'm gonna jump back in as soon as Win7 goes gold, and looking to do a little research on parts. (Btw, running Win7 beta right now and LOVING it!)
