Here's a few films worth checking out.  One I mentioned in a previous article, but it's good enough I'm going to mention it again and encourage everyone to give it a chance.

First up, if you want a film where the characters and the story are the most important part of the film, then check out Henry Poole Is Here.

If you are familiar with the term stigmata, then you'll understand pretty quickly what goes on in Henry Poole.

Luke Wilson plays the title character, a man that obviously has something going on (as he tells the real estate agent that sells him his new home that she needn't bother having the house fixed or negotiate down the price as he "won't be there long") but exactly what it is, well, we have to wait to find that out.

The editorial review at Amazon.com does a pretty good job of running down the film, so take a few seconds to check the product page there.  The title above is linked to my own short and quick review at Amazon which I tried to write without spoiling the film.  Definitely check it out if you can, as it is a very interesting film.

Next up is the already mentioned film The Express: The Ernie Davis Story.  As mentioned in a previous note, it's a great story and looked really nice on Blu-ray disc.  The football action looks really nice, the audio is what you'd expect from a sports action film, with both being almost as good as the story.

Again, I don't want to spoil the story, but it's based on real events and a real person.  If you don't know the story, don't be disappointed as most people would probably not be able to tell you who Ernie Davis was, but if you take time to watch the film, well, you will.

If you just want a silly film to watch, you might enjoy the Dane Cook starring vehicle: My Best Friend's Girl.  Cook gets to have some fun playing a character that is rude, crude, lewd, and just plain an all out a--hole at times (a lot of the time in the film really).  As he does, it leads to laughs for viewers, or at least for viewers that aren't too uptight to enjoy the fun.

If you check my review at Amazon (linked to the film title), you'll see that I'm not necessarily a Dane Cook fan, but I really did enjoy this one.  It is, as promised on the box artwork, rude, crude, lewd and very, very funny assuming you are in the right mood when you watch it.

Swing Vote was fairly entertaining, though it took it's cues from the election in Florida in 2000.  Kevin Costner clowns around a bit as "Bud", the swing voter that will get to decide who the next President of the United States is thanks to a dead head in his state and county and also thanks to technical problems while his vote is being cast.

Not a great film, but entertaining.  Made more so because during the film we get to see both of the political parties and their constituencies turned on their ears a bit to give us a laugh as we see the campaigns competing for Bud's vote.

Outsourced was a total surprise for me.

It's an indie (meaning independent) type film that is a charming and delightful movie.  I started watching it on my Xbox 360 via Netflix streaming, mostly because it was promised to be in high-definition.  As I started watching it, I really hadn't intended to keep watching it since I just wanted to know whether or not the Netflix streaming function would work well on my Xbox 360 and also wanted to see if the promised high-definition was, well, high-definition or rather just something slightly better than what you see on standard DVD.

I'm pleased to report that yes the high-definition is high-definition and even better that this little film is really very good and very funny, as well as cute, charming, delightful and interesting.

If you can get your hands on this film and sit and watch it, please do.

The last film that I wanted to mention is Ghost Town.

If you are familiar with Ricky Gervais of the original (British) version of the show The Office, then you might know of this one and/or may have already caught it.  You might also know Gervais from the excellent series Extras.

In anycase, Gervais is pretty much perfectly cast for the role in this film and the film is pretty good.  Take one loner (Gervais) who died while on the operating table, but then was brought back to life, have him seeing ghosts that need help crossing over, and you have a pretty funny comedy.
