You know, I'll be honest, I pirate a lot of games off Demonoid and usually buy the ones that really impress me. Unfortunately in this day and age, there aren't many impressive games out there.
This was the first game in a LONG time that I've straight-out bought on release. I knew they were a small company and I figured they could use the help. The trailers made the game look really enjoyable and I'm a big fan of DotA.
Well, as I should have expected, this game is -- currently -- shareware-quality junk. EIGHT Demi-gods and a handful of maps? Graphical glitches and a bare-bones GUI? Random freezes during loading screens and gameplay? Nonexistent singleplayer? A completely trainwrecked network? I acknowledge that the network problems are in large part DUE to the pirates themselves, but why on Earth design the game to make server contact just by opening the main menu?
A lot of people will pirate games regardless of quality, but a big part of it has to do with companies releasing things unfinished and at least a month before they're actually complete. Charging $40 for this game right now is as bad a form of thievery as the pirates who are torrenting the game. Both are unethical.
The funny thing is, the LAST game I paid full price for at launch was ... Hellgate: London.
I hope this company has better luck salvaging their product. Unlike Hellgate, I think this game is actually structually sound, and has a lot of potential over the coming months.
