The best suggestion I can make:

Go into single player and play a Skirmish against 2 Easy/Normal AIs. Figure out how game works, do not change settings, just go with all normal. Only by playing over and over you'll see how the mechanics work, what happens when you click this and that.

Only after you feel confident go into multiplayer, otherwise you'll get yelled at

Read Kistrel's Tips, they cover pretty much the basics. Ranged demigods can be a bit more newbie friendly than melee, but it's really up to your preferred playstyle.

Though, Torch Bearer using mostly fire skills is pretty much as simple as they get. "Fireball! Fireball! Fire.. nova!"
