Why tower camping isn't smart.

Hi,

Just lost a game. Was playing Sedna, healing oriented, with a Rook as ally. We were up against QoT and Erebus. Map was Cataract.

As a starting move, Rook went and started tower spamming the middle alley, from where the creeps leaves the base. I thought "hey, nice move !" and watch him level his way up to lvl 15...mind you, the guys on the other side were lvl 11 max.

Well anyway, the tower camping goes on when suddenly, I see QoT going for one of my portal...and Erebus going for the other one. No need to tell that even running non stop from left to right didn't solve the problem at all, at best when I was taking a flag they were taking back the other one and vice versa.

Meanwhile Rook came back to help, but too late, they bought Catapults & Giants...and guess what ? We lost. I don't even call that a close game.

So, Rooks out there, time to learn a new tactic, because leveling is one thing, helping the team is another. Working together as Rook & Sedna could have been an easy win, especially playing with the build I tried.

The problem is not that he tower spammed, it's that he didn't push properly.  If a rook is doing that, he should be trying to push up through their towers, not just camping in a lane.

Something like that happened to me as well... the enemy creeps seem to be the worst enemy of the tower rook... but i stopped investing in boulder roll/level/god hand and going hammer slam... haven't lost yet

Oh he did push through, but by that time, they had already taken our portals :/

The rook should always carry some teleport scrolls so he can jump back when he needs to.

You lost because they outmanuevered you, which is almost completely unrelated to Rook's strategies.

You could have solved this problem with capture locks.  On the other hand, the other team could have made this far more dangerous by using capture locks.  Also teleport scrolls are a must.

I have to agree with FraggleSmurf - Rooks need teleport scrolls, and it sounds like it would have made a big difference.

I, personally, buy two - one to get out of combat, and one to get in.

If they had the money and the warscore to purchase giants and cata's, then the fight was anything but one sided and you just got outplayed.

This is always the real question.  How were they able to so easily sneak in and capture your towers, and get cats and Giants?  I mean, what did you do with your citadel?

I don't feel that pushing up the middle of cataract with rook is all that good an idea... not sure if I've got it right from your description... but it seems like he was taking all the creep kills and xp without restricting the enemy creep kills and xp at all...

what exactly were THEY doing while your partner was spamming towers in the middle?

I mean, it is a competitive game, so you get your edge by fighting the enemy... if they scored kills on you while your rook was doing this, and in turn you did not score kills... its obvious which side had the economic advantage...?

Well, I had trouble taking them 1v1 as my build wasn't really combat oriented, but more of a support for Rook. So they were going left and right capping flags and destroying our defenses, bypassing towers and capping our portals back at base. And yes, they were way ahead as for economics.

Ya, I played a game last week; the rook opponent was ohhhh so slowly working his way down one side of the Cat map.  My teamates seemed determined to stop him; battle him; "MUST STOP ROOK".  I think if we had just caped the other 90% of the flags on the map, we would have had a good chance of winning.  If you can't beat'em, cap'em.

To be fair, it's very easy to "sneak in" and capture portals in Cataract, as there are only a small number of towers in the way. But, yes, the catas/giants thing does suggest the game had already been lost.

Bought Giants & Catas at the same time we did ^^ but yeah anyway the thing is that the game was lost the moment Rook started camping their creep path :/

Considering I can't defend 2 flags at the same time herrr...let's see...if he ever did defend one of those, I could have been a bit more helpful by taking back the other one. Anyway, point is that if you decide to go towering, do it efficiently ^^

This is a great strategy.  I've been using it recently.  Never occured to me to do this.  I have to admit this is a great tactic.  Especially when you have a demigod stand there and try to contend with you inside his towers.  He will never get XP because his team mates will be in the lanes killing all our creeps, or at very least they die at the tower before.  This is a solid strat to hold onto the 20% XP flag, especially if you have some kind of support (Sedna, QoT).

Yeah I play exclusively Rook online and what this Rook player did, while is a nice idea isn't smart since you aren't constricting the enemies warscore or killing them off thus letting them level up with impunity. I usually do the tower pushing build as well with Rook and it usually works, but I usually do it in one of the creep lanes and try to kill any enemy demigod trying to stop me.

And cataract defensive areas suck anyways, it would definately be easy to sneak in and steal a portal, then build giants, that would almost GG any game.

It's actually very easy to defend 2 flags at the same time, you just need to be quick about it. Go to the first flag, lock it, teleport to the other flag, kill, lock, teleport back to the original flag, kill, lock, restock.

I could have been a bit more helpful by taking back the other one. Anyway, point is that if you decide to go towering, do it efficiently ^^

Yes, this is true. A towering rook is incredibly hard to stop once he gets going. But if he's moving in the wrong direction, why should your opponents even care about stopping him anyway?

20% XP from the center flag, and my team mates bouncing back and forth taking turns capping the other 2 will net us a higher war score AND levels.

If you guys actually played with 3 v 3 as is intended for the map rather than 2 v 2, it would have been much more effective for the Rook to have concentrated on holding the middle since it would have left the two of you to team up on the other flags.

Also, the best Rook players I'm with know when to move their tower emplacement to another flag and when to stay put.

So, in the end, you're incorrect: just because the strategy wasn't effective in this particular instance doesn't mean the strategy in general is ineffective.
