Hot Potato: Passing the Heart
By Zechnophobe Posted May 19, 2009 13:13:26
Just recently, in an impromptu move during a potentially game ending, but early, lane push, a friend and I discovered a rather interesting strategy.
We all know how awesome the Heart of Life is, allowing you to rejuvenate fully every bit of time. The only downsides being that it can be disrupted, and that it costs a decent amount of money (for the early game). Well, the cooldown on the Heart isn't too bad, 45 seconds, and you rarely need to use it quite that often.
So what occurred to us, was that why did we BOTH need a 4250 gold heart of life, when we could simply pass it back and forth? We were on voice chat, so communicating this wasn't difficult. You can't pass an item currently cooling down, but you can just give the heart, when ready, to whichever player currently needs it more... often the one that took the bigger beating in the previous encounter.
It started to get me thinking about other items that could potentially be used this way, especially those with strong static effects. It is at least food for thought.

This is why we need a demiAIDS game mechanic. Pass the heart and you lose your immunity to UB's plague.
Horrible and politically incorrect jokes aside, I typically buy the mageslayer as QoT late game and then give it to an assassin ally. Hadn't considered swapping strats with it but you actually could hand it off when one of you has to return to the base for some reason. The trick is you'd need to keep an empty slot in everyone's inventory so the item doesn't get wasted.

I'd move to have item swapping banned. I'm not sure why -- maybe I've just never done and it don't consider it a valid "pro" tactic, but I guess if it's doable it makes sense in the case of items like heart.
I'm trying to think of items like Ashkandor or the Bulwark that would work, but I don't see it being all that effective.
Heart is deffinetly useful to swap if one ally is getting focused more than his lane partner, but perish the thought of trying to micro that during a battle or escape.

Yes so watch out. Enemy queen was running away and tried to use their HoL while running and accidentally dropped it. I picked it up and laughed with glee.

Banning item swapping would be overkill. Non-consumables should just have their cooldown started whenever you first acquire them.

If you pool to buy ashkandor for a regulus, that will end the game very likely.

Me and my freinds tend to pass HoL and teleport scrolls.

by pool you mean give him all your items to sell to get the money, or simply buy it for him?
Second one. And if you can do that.... just pool for freaking giants! Way better investment than having one super reg and two shittily geared teammates; just chainstun the reg and then kill the allies later.
