Can't launch game

Single player skirmish ... set up AI players and then this error when starting skirmish.

I have used the impulse app to update Demigod, after updating I run the validation and it says incorrect installation and downloads and installs a 9kB patch. After the update it fails validation again and wants to install the patch.

My system is a new, virtually clean installation of 32 bit Vista with updated drivers.
