Hi there! I'm new to Demigod -- just downloaded it a few days ago, played some single player to get a feel for the items and controls, and then did what I've done in every multiplayer game I've ever owned (and there have been a lot of them) and jumped into online play. I'm a newb, not a n00b, and I've been scouring the forums for strategies and information and have been slowly improving my game -- which at this point means I'm learning how not to feed, and I'm also getting pretty handy with the teleport scrolls and capture locks. In a few weeks, I expect to be passable at the game, which pretty much follows the learning curve in any competitive multiplayer game.
The problem is that I might not make it that far -- not because of the game... so far it's been technically flawless on my machine, and once I opened up my firewall ports I've yet to have a problem with connectivity (except people with -2 sim speed, but what can you do?). The problem is that the online, in-game community for this game is the most unfriendly, unhelpful and generally ridiculous that I've encountered anywhere, and my resume of online gaming runs very long.
I'm sorry that I don't know where the good creep lanes are on every map yet. I'm sorry that sometimes my build is a bit 'sub optimal' while I learn and try different things. I'm sorry that I'm still trying to figure out which characters I like the best in online play. But #$*@, how the hell do you people expect me to figure this stuff out if every time I play I've got half my team telling me off about obscure things and telling me what to do (often before I can even do it, in terms of level/skills). And it's not advice, which I ADORE. I had one guy give me a few pieces of advice, and we not only came back and won that game, but I learned a *ton* about how things go. Everyone else has just been a giant dillhole.
So, I implore people, don't kill this game with your adolescent attitudes and smug superiority. Good for you that you played DOTA or Beta or whatever, but if you want to be able to play Demigod a year from now and get xpacs, you'd best try to work on not completely douching out your new players. Frankly, it's worse even that UT or CS, and that's pretty god damn sad! And it's not even that bad for me, because I'm just trying to adjust from twitch gameplay to gentle, run-away-a-lot strategy. I couldn't imagine being an honest-to-god online-gaming newbie and having to face the assholes that populate almost all of the DG matches I play.
