Physical location and high pings

I know Demigod has had a lot of different connection issues and that most of them have been fixed but I was wandering if the distance between players has any effect on your ping.

I live down in New Zealand and I am really keen to buy Demigod but I don't want to spend $60 just to find I'm being kicked from every game I join because of high ping.

Yes, ping can be affected by physical distance.

Does it affect it much? Do the Australian players have trouble playing with people in the US or is it not bad enough to worry about?

i find that i can play a very decent game ONLY with aussie players. i never play internationally, only coz lag is unbearable.

never played with a newzealander so im quite curious to see wat the ping will be.

Well I don't know if you will get the chance because I am not willing to buy a game that i can only play against a potentialy tiny amount of people. I have no idea why GPG would choose a differnt way to host the multiplayer when it creates lag like that. I have played plenty of other RTS online and never had enough lag to make it unplayable.

Mmm, yeah. About that. I live on Guam, which is amazingly close to Australia, and I still get pings of 400+ to Aussies. To Americans, I get about 200 ping, and to other Guam players, very close to 0 because the island is so damn small. So yeah, playing with Americans will pose a problem for you.

 

From what I've seen though, Demigod is substantially less laggy than other games, but then I'm not an Aussie.

Kiwi here.

Latency to Americans is about 280 for me here in Wellington. definitely playable (anything under 350 is) but half of north Americans will kick you for ping over 200 (from my experience) in custom games. that being said there is a nice little Aussie/kiwi crowd that is fun to play with (bar a couple of knobs)

 

Hope that helps. I've had the game since digital release and aisde from the connection problems in the past its been well worth the purchase

I wouldn't count on playing on most American games, as most won't even play with people from the opposite coast (and we are talking about a difference of 25-50 ping).

I've been able to connect to a few people all over the place a lot of the time, but theres still a fre > 900 pings out there to me.

Im in US east, And I will play with anyone from anywhere so long as the ping is stable and below 350.  I have played with Aus with no issues.

Honestly, I have more problems with sim speed than ping.  I think a lot of people don't realize how much the sound settings can effect the speed of the game.

I am fine with sim speed (I think, is there a definition somewhere?).

I'm waiting for my new debit card to come in the post so I can buy DG online and save myself $40

Hmmm, I have found p2p to be a real crux of this game.  I understand the reason behind using it, but it seriously has hurt my and friends abilities to play with anyone outside our city even.  Yeah you can get alright games interstate, but by the time I got the game my mates had already all but given up on net games due to their stutteryness (especially late game), and we now just hamachi with ourselves (benifit of knowing enough people who own AG ^^).


I really, really wish they had stuck to host/client style networking.  At least people can deal with their issues on their own and let the game move at a respectable speed for the majority.

As has already been stated on the forums, nearly all RTS games use the P2P model with obviously slightly different network structures. Yes, even Warcraft 3. It's hardly the 'crux' of the game. What country are you from? How do you believe the 'stutteryness' of the game experience late game is linked to P2P?

I've found playing with New Zealand players to actually have very little difference in ping my fellow Australians, however there don't appear to be too many New Zealanders around. American and European games are off limits for me, though, I believe my connection just isn't fast enough to deal with that many connections over the distance. Hope you enjoy the game!

That's probably a simspeed issue and not ping - sim speed gets slower as the game goes on, but ping stays about the same.
