Ok so.. the play style. I'm a huge coward and run a lot horray! seriously though.. if you're regulus.. you should run away a lot. pick only good fights. You have to. You pretty much have no escapes. I generally have to give up the flag i'm at initially, unless my partner is particularly strong early on (rook/qot/sedna). I then poke my opponent over and over as soon as I have level 2 and the range upgrade. I poke and run back to my tower over and over. And lower their health slowly. if I do it right I can either force them away or lead them into chasing me into my tower and dying tower when I potion. Either way, I usually can capture the flag at one point. I'll then start poking their tower until they come back. When they do I'm usually oom by then and around level 5 so I'll caplock the flag i'm at and run my ass back to town.
As soon as I get back I get tower armor 1 to make sure they don't killmy tower in my absence. then I get boots of speed and the damage gloves and another cap lock (passing up gloves if I don't have enough gold) and get back out there. I continue to hit and run until the enemy is about 65% health then I try to hit them with 2 mines and go for another kill or force them away. I then proceed to finish the first tower and push further in. they'll eventually come back and I'll lock the flag and run home again. At this point I'll get the 550 mana helm and the gold upgrade. If I have gold I'll pick up a lock and a portal (selling the sight upgrade).
At this point I try to push all the other 1st towers in the other lanes. I'll be around level 7 and have solid 3 mines which is a good tower killer. Once I get all the first towers down I'll usually go back to town round out my items (which are really cheap and efficient) and pick up priests and armor 1. Then I'll continue to whittle towers and lock flags. I save all my money to evenually get the big unit upgrades to push for a war rank victory by continuing to hit and run towers and cap flags.
Some additional notes: I only get 1 rank of snipe: The difference between like rank 1 and rank 4 is .. 500 damage? It's not very good and generally 500 (rank 1 damage) is enough to tip the tide of any 1v1 so it's enough support. Also, rank 1 snipe still can 'carry' a rank 3 maim so it helps slow fleeing/chasing DGs all the same. Frankly.. the other skills are better. Being able to shoot someone from way behind your creepwave/towers is HUGE advantage.
No tracking: I don't snipe for a lot of damage, so I'm not gonna be able to finish you off with that late second snipe anyways so I don't bother.
Max range: People say you need only 1 rank. That's wrong. You need all 3. It's extremely important because it allows you to hit oak/UB/sedna with a slow and run well before they are able to snare you heavily.
No mark: It's good I admit it. However you can't have everything. The main issue isn't that you'll have 1 less rank of slow and 1 less rank of range it's that it's extremely mana intensive skill. As you can see.. I only have 1 mana item. Mark is very expensive and mines are very cheap. I'd rather just spam a lot of mines because if I use mines/mark 2x i'm oom and I have to run back.. which is detrimental. You can argue this point, but really what item would you give up for another mana slot? I assure you without boots of speed you will die faster than you can say mark of betrayer.
Only 1 rank of fury: Again this has to do with mana consumption. Early on.. it's a huge drain on mana so it's difficult to use this mines and snipe. Later on I'd rather have extra stats for 2 reasons: 1. stats gives +6 damage anyways.. and an increase in attack speed, so if the increase in attack speed is comparable to 6 damage it's like 12 damage anyways. I'll also get a boost in armor/health and mana which are all necessary since I have shitty items and most my money goes to citadel. 2. The aoe range doesn't get any bigger anyways. So I'm not losing much. Also, I have the option of turning off fury if I am just poking a single tower. It will only cost me 25 damage, as opposed to 100 if I were to go 4 ranks.
Mine usage: Always stand in a position that creep waves do not run over and sit on at least 3 mines. Generally I sit on 6 as I poke an enemy tower and only throw 3 mines at the enemy tower when I know I can finish it. Then when an enemy DG comes I just lure them into 6 mines. I then cast my capture lock on whatever flag I'm near (generally there are flags near towers). The animation is similar to a portal or throwing mines. 90% of the time, the enemy DG will use their interrupt. Ok. Now I throw 3 more mines on top of us.. so now he just ate 9 mines.. so 9*400 = 3600 damage. Unless it's senda or QoT.. you should win that fight.
Running: If you have rank 4 mines running is fairly easy as the enemy DG is slowed when he is on top of you. Before then though you have 1 of 2 options:
1. Run early. with the +5 radius you should be able to run really freakin' early. Pretty much at the sight of oak/ub/erebus (particularly erebus!) you should run. With +25% move speed.. there's really no way any of those 3 will catch you unless they are also specced +25% move speed. Even then.. it's a lot of mana to repeatedly slow you. They also ran over 6 of your mines.. so they risk your buddies coming to gank them.
2. Portal scroll. It's important to not get this interrupted. Try to fake people out by repeatedly casting flag cap and cancelling by moving. As soon as you eat the stun cast portal. If you're not near a flag, the throwing mine animation is fairly similar. If you're oom and not near a flag you can try to cast portal then quickly move so that they interrupt 'nothing'. This is the most risky of course, but sometimes you got no options.
That's about all I can think of. The secret is that regulus is strongest when his support is strongest. Having more creeps/stronger towers makes regulus more deadly than actually upgrading his damage/ armor. You can never out-run this build, as +25% move speed and -10% move speed from maim only really loses to an anklet + wand of speed user. Which isn't that common. So just stick behind your wave of creeps/towers and poke ppl and lure them into mines you're standing on. Run early, ninja flags and towers, assist your allies with those snipes. Win by war rank and citadel upgrades.
