I apologize ahead of time for this long-winded post.
I've been playing Demigod since its release, and have played online a couple of times, but as usual I was turned off and have been playing offline since then.
Maybe I should back up a bit and give some history of my online gaming and gaming in general:
I've loved all video games for as long as I remember (I'm 35 and really do not remember a time that I didn't understand the concept of a video game). I've never been very good at them, but I have always loved to play.
My first real experiece with online play was with a 1st gen Xbox, and I was playing with xlink. At the time my chosen genre was fps. And always death matches. And I quickly found a group of people to play with. We founded the misfits clan. I only now realize how lucky I was to find these people as I didn't realize how rare they were. What I mean is that nobody cared about winning or losing, or how good anybody was. We all just had lots of fun playing. In other words it wasn't competative gaming. Even when we did play team games like ctf, there was no in-fighting in the team because someone wasn't pulling his/her own weight from inexperience or what have you. It didn't matter. There was friendly, playful ribbing but when it came time for the next game, we gladly kept the same teams because again: we weren't playing to win. We were playing to have fun.
So many of the founding members of that clan, including myself, went our separate ways and I actually stopped gaming for a short while. I got into the rts genre and have been playing those games almost exclusively now. I'm actually worse at rts than I am at fps, but I think I enjoy them more. Anyway I tried War3 on battlenet for a while, 1 on 1 or ffa usually.
I wouldn't call battlenet a friendly place. More than once I was told that I simply shouldn't play. (This should give a hint at how bad I actually am at gaming). It wasn't fun to play like that. I like playing with other people but I can't stand that sort of attitude. Even on the few games that I won I was just accused of cheating somehow. It seemed that there wasn't anyone there that could just have a friendly game. So that ended battlenet.
Fast forward now to a few months ago when I tried Demigod. I absolutly loved (love) the game. Its really one of those "simple to learn, lifetime to master" games. I played for a couple of weeks offline, and chose a favourite demigod to play (Torch Bearer). I gave online a try.
Now I might as well copy and paste the paragraph I wrote above about battlenet. Except this time it was perhaps worse as all the griping came from my teammates. Granted, I am an awful player and I'm sure that I am the reason we lost. Every time. My timing was off, I didn't understand a lot of the intricacies of the game and so I became a target for easy gold and experience. You can imagine the response from my teammates I'm sure.
My problem is that I haven't the time to practice enough to get to a competative level of play online. Nor do I really care to. I don't care if I'm good at the game, or if I lose 85% of the time. I play to have fun, and to me that doesn't necessitate winning.
I guess my reason for posting this is to just find out if there's anyone out there who would just like to play a few games now and again, purely for the fun of it.
Sorry for the novel.
