Proper Rook tower use?

Rook towers.  Is it best to chain them from a large tower, or to put them in a loose cluster, so they can individually target?

As far as I've seen, they chain their shots, but I see a lot of little hits.  Can anyone explain the system?

Also, is there a key that will select them, other than clicking on them?

I've tried to select towers and make them target enemy DG but failed. I wonder if that's even possible (read it somewhere on the forum) :/

It is not possible, they follow the normal tower AI:

  1. Acquire closest target if they have none:
  2. If they have a target, shoot at it.

This means they do not change targets once they have one.  This is why you can get away with a lot by sending in a minion swarm, or following a creep wave.

 

Note that the graphical 'chaining' effect of towers has zero effect on gameplay.  Dissappointing, but true.

Stacking them and using them as kind of a "Safty zone" for your rook to hold up in. If you leave this "Safty zone" you will probably get pushed back into it or get stuck in a tight situation.

Are we sure on the non-targeting?  I've double clicked one, which selects all, picked a DG in the middle of a crowd and it will keep firing on him until he leaves the range.  Granted, I don't watch that it happens everytime, but when I DO watch, it always works.

 

Ok, so the chain effect is nothing?  Just illusion?  So it's best to have them in a cluster to all fire on the enemy?

I was under the assumption that chaining from the forces of light/darkness towers did NOT add damage, but chaining your own towers did.  I haven't tested this theory, however.  I also thought I was able to target with my rook's towers, but it could be coincidence.

I think so too.  If you watch a DG getting hit by a bunch of towers "chaining", he'll get like 4 -80s in between each lightning bolt shot (5 towers present).  So I think it's actually invisibly hitting him/her.  I somehow assumed the chain from a big tower would help out, but it probably doesn't.

 

In fact, I've been using them wrong for quite some time, putting a big chain out, thinking it did more that way.  I'm seeing more results from a cluster.  Anyone want to test?

Tower chaining is just a graphic effect.  Each tower hits once and only hits one item within it's range.

And for further confusion, you may seen them chain and only one shows a hit.  This is simply graphical, they each hit seperatly, and I belive possible at different targets, even when only one seems to be hitting a target.

I believe on the DG Wiki it suggested that each chained tower adds some slight amount of damage. I imagine it is all in the .LUA files if you dig deep enough.

 

I've noticed that one of the towers of power is selectable(this screws me over way to often), though I have not conclusively tested any targeting ability in such a situation.

I have seen it chain, but zooming in you see a -80 every second or so.  So it does appear to be graphical, I don't see it spike higher or lower on damage.
