I think you don't consider matches where its not ub, oak erb, zen. Try that for moment and see if you think more... I believe you don't play much anymore, yes?
I find my fire tb is more than adequate even against the current players of oak, ub, erb (or rook ub erb... or whatever)... so, it is true that competition has died a little bit, but frankly, 3 man teams where players have to pick the same crap over and over is boring. In a true high level game, I would never use da. Nor would I use reg... probably not occ... and so on. But in a game where you don't pick the top 3 or 4, everything is optional and da is quite strong. Its just not reasonable to compare him to erb/oak/ub. He's not as good as them, but he serves his own purpose. To say he is crap is idiotic. He's just not as good as the few i mentioned. He's an excellent counter to most dgs on a competent team. But again - note I said I won't use him in a top level game... same as you and I wouldn't pick reg, prob not qot, etc.
Had a very high level game against GM a while back probably in may or april were I random'd a DA
My team was Ereb, Oak, Da and theirs was ereb, oak, sedna
My team had more kills but lacked flag control and we lost due to being behind I think 4 warscore.
Every encounter resulted in multiple deaths almost always split amongst the two teams and it always ended with the GM team retaining flag control because Oak, Sedna, Erebus rarely have to shop even after a huge fight.
DA is viable in high level games but the team and the DA player have to play nearly perfect.
