Jedi mind tricks only work on the weak willed I hear, Starkers. ; )
The song is actually about a real event that occurred in California a few of decades ago. A well-known local man was arrested for such a murder and none of the locals could believe he did it. He fled from the police and wrote weekly letters to the area newspaper defending his innocence--which most locals completely believed in. There were several rallies, with hundreds in attendance, held in his defense by the public along with vigils, prayer gatherings and protests at city hall demanding the charges be dropped and a new investigation done looking for "the real criminal"
Finally, after weeks of letters, he wrote a final one that basically came out like the lyrics of this song and for the first time signed it--instead of with his name--as "Mr. Hate".
Lot's of people felt really stupid afterwards realizing a they'd been publicly duped for months by an actual psychopath.
So the back story makes the song charming. ; )
And Landru is a lie!
