Quoting tjashen, reply 9Warlords III - Reign Of Heroes/Darklords Rising (don't play it as much these days as it won't work on my Vista machine despite numerout attempts to get it to work, I still have an XP laptop that I use specificallty to play this game when I get the itch).
Duh, mine stopped working even on XP, dunno why, maybe disk scratched. But I like it very much, sure.
Even with XP it requires some hoops to jump through. I had to do a few things with compatability settings/download some files...
www.warlorders.com is a good place to start, if you want to give it another go.
The game mechanics are dated by today's standards, but it's still fun making hero stacks. I did find an earlier version of Warlords that works with DOSBox, but they added a number of things to ROH/DLR that make the game more interesting and easier to interact with, so by comparison, I found the earlier version a little frustrating/lacking in the interface department.
WL3 has directdraw issues with my Vista install that I've never gotten around. Toshiba hasn't updated the driver software for my integrated graphics in years, and the ATI interface won't let me update, saying I need to talk to Toshiba. Some have managed to get it to work in Vista, but others have been unsuccessful despite the numerous suggestions that have been offered by those who managed to get it to work.
I did send a note to the Warlords guys saying they need to update the game code a bit so it will work on Vista/7/8, and sell it on GOG (Warlords Battlecry is currently on GOG), but no response...
