Fences docked to bottom of screen set as up Rollup, lose their position on reboot.

I have 3 Fences placed at the bottom of the screen, Docked, they use the Rollup feature.

Every time I boot up the PC, they are no longer docked, but placed randomly around the desktop

The fences lose the size I manually set also.

Its in the pita, to manually keep putting back where i want them and to resize again, every boot up.

this is a basic "bug" that should have been spotted at Q and A testing.

After setting "Layout management & backups" to "Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuration basis," if I move a couple of Fences from their original position and dock them at the bottom of the screen, they remain docked at the bottom of the screen after a restart.

I only have one monitor, but this setting seems to solve the issue.

If it makes any difference, this is a 40" 4K (3840x2160) monitor.

I haven't been able to reproduce this either. Not on the Windows 11 system itself, nor in Sandbox. Something could be fundamentally different about my display (1920 x 1200 is my maximum resolution, for example).

That being said, the closest I've been able to get to this happening on my end is by taking an automatic layout provided by Fences, moving it elsewhere, and then changing these outlined settings:

Interestingly, with "Don't preserve my desktop layout" checked, even in "restarting" with Windows Sandbox, it does produce a very similar looking problem of randomly scattered Fences.

So, my impression is that if anyone experiencing this is confirming they have it set to "Preserve my layout", and still the preserving of the layout is failing-- then we need to know (1) what is unique to your system that could be affecting your display, and (2) what you have changed since the problem started.

If the answers are unknown for whatever reason, please see if you can Windows Sandbox to recreate the problem in this environment. Windows 11 (won't work in 10) will allow you do this, and even record video capture of the problem through a simulated "reboot".

To treat this as a reproducible software issue, we would need such verifiable evidence to log the bug internally for our developers to look into.

what is unique about my system is I use a 30 inch monitor at 2560 x 1600 resolution, nothing unique there

BUT... this monitor only has a DVI‑D and DVI-I inputs, I use the DVI-D. my graphics card only has display port or HDMI

I have to use a active ie powered "DisplayPort to DVI Dual Link Active Adapter" to get the res 2560 x 1600.

The upshot is during reboot, the screen res changes and i think this is interfering with the fences layout

initially the screen res is to small, so fences might be adjusting the fences to fit in the smaller res.

BUT screen res change occurs at the login screen before the desktop even appears.

when the Login screen first appears, I can tell the res isnt at 2560x1600, its smaller but I dont know what its at because that initial screen only shows a random wallpaper. a few seconds later, the res automatically adjusts to 2560 x 1600 then I log in to the desktop.

when I first installed Fences i left the options at the default settings.

In the Back-Ups group "Preserve my layout by scaling my fence groups" was checked

But, the sub option of "when I plug in a new primary monitor, move my icons to it" was not.

After I watched the video posted earlier, I checked that option also. It did affect the result but it did not fix it.

But I also tried the option "Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuration basis"

and this option seems to be the way to go as the fences retained their positions after reboot.

Ive only done one reboot and one total shutdown, BUT the fence locations, docked at the bottom+roll up survived the reboot and were in the correct positions. I'll wait a few more days to see how it goes.

Thanks for the heads up, i actually hadnt read #reply 26, i missed it

im hoping this setting continues to work for me as it does for you, ie because i have the extra issue of an adapter sitting between my gfx card and monitor changing the res at reboot.

I think its resolved now, Ive done a few reboots and shutdowns and my fences retain their positions.
