'Holy Grail' For My Kids' Generation

Introducing my children to the wonders of British comedy

Bought the Special Edition DVD of Holy Grail on Friday after work, used at EB Games. So, Friday night we let the kids stay up late (ooh, 9:30) and watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Link

Man, did they love it. Ben is still singing the Camelot song. Link

Then we found the Lego version of the same song, as a special feature on the DVD. Link

My kids love that movie also, and the Lego Camelot cracks us all up every time!!

My wife, however, can't stand the movie. To her, the only thing funny about it is watching people quote lines from it... complete with aweful attempts at the British accents and voice characterizations. Isn't it funny how you can't just quote a line from that movie, you have to quote it in character. ;~D

Glad to see that you too are continuing the legacy.

You have no idea at how many people have come up to me and asked me to do a Monty Python skit, or shown me theirs and then looked at me expectantly, hoping that I will somehow validate their performance by telling them they have a good accent.....

I'm British, not a comedian.

Having said that, I do get my daily MP fix on the BBC in America.

BBC America is a fantastic resource for all things "Bwitish". I mean, who would have heard of "The Office" if it wasn't for BBC America?

Lived two fun-filled years in London, as a missionary for my church.

Here's scary: I once had a friend from Nottingham refer to Ardal O'Hanlon as a "comedy genius". Link

I may be wrong (and I probably am), but my guess is the phrase "the ugly American" came out of international disgust for our attempts to impress native speakers with our ability to speak English with a (place any native tongue here) accent. That goes triple for British and Australians. ;~D

I get more laughs out of "The Office' than anything else....mainly because I knoe people who behave exactly like the characters!

Have you seen 'Little Britain' yet? If you haven't.....dude, you gotta watch it.

Yep. It makes me physically cringe when I hear someone trying to say 'Bloody Hell'...it comes out like 'Bluh-ee ewwwl' and it's just horrible.

I get asked to do the parrot sketch more than anything else.....closely followed by the spam skit.

My favorite MP skit by far... the Philosphers Song gets me every time.

And yet the Philosopher's Drinking Song was never on the show, it was for the "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" stage film. But

People asked me if I developed an accent while I lived in the UK (as if it was something I'd come down with). I had to say no, but I actually can do a passable imitation, and 'm not just deluding myself. I refuse to quote Monty Python on command, but I am more prone to drop a Wallace & Gromit quote ("It's CHEESE, Gromit!", or "This robot's turned out EVIL!").

Infinitely quotable? Mr. Bean.

For the record: yes, my kids love Mr. Bean so very much. Especially the mini-golfing and, of course, the swimming pool/high dive.

If I were forced to quote Monty Python, I would probably go with, "I'll have your Spam! I love it! I'm having Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, baked beans, Spam, Spam, and Spam!"
