As im sure many of you will know, Microsoft have recently re-branded their Anti-Spyware software to "Windows Defender" what i didnt agree with was the lengths they went too to get the name "Windows Defender"
The name was actually owned by an australian guy who coded some software for Internet Explorer to prevent the homepage being changed by unauthorized programs
Microsoft wrote to him asking him to sign over the name in a format which he described as "Hand over or else"
We all know Microsoft protect their trademarks with a certain ferocity about their actions, but i mean this guy was one guy by himself that wrote a small piece of software a year ago to help windows customers - where i might add microsoft have been slow to do so in the past!
They then use their weight against him in this manner, not disclose any reason for them wanting the name, they then go and re-brand their new AntiSpyware technology to that name, and offer him no compensation or gestures of goodwill or anything else
I personally do not agree with them on this one, while yes the name was in use and possibly infringed on a windows trademark then i feel they could have been a lot more generous to someone who is helping their customers when it was at a time when they hadnt even invented any software to prevent changes to IE - Hence peoples move to FF!
