Make Images Transparent

Is there a way without paying money?

Here's my situation, I want to make some transparent Icons or dock images and whatever, but I don't know how, I don't have photoshop, psp or whatever else, i only got a gif converter, paint, and graphics gale free edition, is there a way to pull it off without spending money I don't have?

You can always Google Making transparent images in Gimp for more, or google for whatever tutorial you want.

I tried Gimp and found it a bit over my head. It's not laid out to be as user friendly as the stuff you might pay for, but it is a great tool. I believe a few people here use it and turn out some great work.

I tried Gimpshop and had more luck. I might have had more luck if I knew Photosop.
