Galciv vs MOO3

Galciv vs MOO3

GalCiv has been a multi-threaded game ever since ver 1.0 for OS/2 hit the market 9 years ago.
According to Amazon.com:
1) MOO2 is DOS based
2) GalCiv will be released on March 18, 2003 and is a Strategy First product
Why is MOO3 getting so much press?

3) GalCiv port to Windows has added many improvements
4) 9 years refining this game must count for something
5) it multi-tasks in beta almost as well as os/2 ver did
(need improvements in game loads and auto-pilot)
6) Will coding this game to run under 98/ME hurt gameplay vs making XP required OS. I know most people havent upgraded to XP but I did buy OS/2 ver 3 and 4 just to play GalCiv 2.0 Gold with Shipyards!
7) just call me a die-hard GalCiv fan :)

I wouldn't play a strategy game on a console for these reasons:

1) Resolution. GalCiv is 1024x768. Typical console game is 720x480 BEST case.

2) No keyboard which limits options.

3) Lack of mouse makes it more tedious to control large number of units.

4) While most consoles have very powerful GPUs, they have wimpy CPUs. The X-box is what? 800Mhz?

Everyone I know has a PC and numerous consoles.. I for one have a PC(and I'm in the process of upgrading) a PS1 and Game Cube and a GBA (if that even counts). I play them all equally. I think you have to look at the games more than the systems they run on. Every platform for gaming I have purchased has been because of a game/games. Now I know a lot of people wouldn't purchase a PC just for a game, but that doesn't change the fact that a lot of people have PCs and although more games may be created for consoles I don't think it has any bearing on how well any 1 PC game does in sales.

Brad,

1) Hmm, good point - didnt know that

2) Not sure that will affect anything - again, how much do you use the keyboard playing galciv?

3) Well, for our generation yes, but remember the teenagers have mutated, and their finger dexterity is amazing from both SMS'sing constantly, and from playing games with strange controls.
Other than that, it would probably not be a problem to add a mouse to the console

4)Ok, didn't know that either :) But will both Galciv and Moo3 run nicely on 800 Mhz??

Again, I'm not trying to agitate or anything here, just a bit curious since my statements actually fit with what 3 storeowners has told me - they increase shelvespace for consolegames, and decrease it for PC'games.

Wyrenn, interesting, since none of my friends has multiple consoles and a pc - a few of them own a playstation but thats it. Again, it's probably a social thing and we only see what our closest relatives, friends and families own.
And of course the amount of console games being bought has an influence on the sales for any 1 pc game - it's the same money they compete for.
The targetgroup with most "disposable income" in Denmark at least, is kids aged 15-22, and they are the ones that decides the future of games.

uh-oh, re-reading my post I can see I come off a little strongheaded. Sorry about that, it's not intentional, I just tend to get carried away in some of my statements :-)

" Resolution. GalCiv is 1024x768. Typical console game is 720x480 BEST case"

by the way 720 x 480 is ntsc consumer standard which also means it's interlaced, so you get 2 fields for each frame of video being displayed and each field is 720 x240 (240 being vertical resolution) That's why on tv a line at an angle looks like it has steps in it. Prgressive scan for tv (unless you have a hd set and receiver) only comes into play if you have a dvd player with progressive out and a tv that will accept it. So basically the console is 1/4 the resolution of this game
