MOO3, love it or hate it?

I don't know what to think of this game. It got some raving reviews and some not so good ones. The most recent review on gamesdomain http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/reviews/pc/feb03/master_of_orion_3.html gave it only 2.5 :notsure:

I think I will wait till people test it themself before making a purchase. Who knows, by that time I can get it second hand ;)

I have the same dilemma. I don`t think I`m going to buy it though. Maybe they will patch it later and make it a decent game - we will just have to wait and see.

lol - can't even use proper grammar anymore :)

What I meant to stupilate, was that my Moo3 arrives tomorrow, in case anyone wondered LOL

So far every reviewer that gave it a low mark I have historically disagreed with, and every one that gave it a high mark I've historically agreed with. So, I'm going to wait and see.

Does anyone know how long it takes for swedish mail to reach other nordic countries??
My copy was shipped yesterday, and would LOVE to play this weekend :)

Well, after reading the reviews and hearing that it is a huge spreadsheet in a sense I am going to now hold off and see what others say after they play it a bit.

Waiting a month does at leaast two things. First it gives it an opportunity to drop in price and second GalCiv will be out! :)

So, those of you that are getting it for sure will you post your honest thoughts back on these boards?

Thanks

I've had it on pre-order since early December (supposed to be a Christmas present), but its snowing again so it'll be a day or two before I can get up to EB.

I love it, but i know i'm in the very small minority that will. Mainly cause i have no life and can devote to the learning pit.

It frustrates me that i am in the minority cause We need a good come back for 4x games after RFTS. Where the majority of people will think RFTS is a better game. Galciv will bring it back, but it will keep the Genre at the micromanagement level. I just don't like the Goveners in galciv.. they sound like they should be AI's and not just build queues...

Some one wanna give me a million dollars so i can build my "perfect" 4X game?

Even though it doesn't have Darloks, I went to the store today and they didn't have it... damn Canadian customs...

Tell me, someone who's played it, are the differences between the races are fairly relevant? Is combat actually fun? I also have a feeling that diplomacy is no better than in the previous MoOs...

the differences between the raves are fairly relavent, from starting diplomatic relationsm and likely hood of your populence wants to go to war with them, and they want to go to war with you. Are dependant on who you are and who they are. There are also vastly different desirablity of planets depoending on base race/species. Actually if you can ignore the lack of feedback "What actions of mine don't ypu like?" I think the diplomacy is better then Moo2 .. but I still don't think its better then Galciv. MoO3's cassisi belli (sp) adds more to the diplomacy i think.

I have only played on easy so far, and only participated in one battle.. (I play a more diplomatic game) and so far its kinda fun. But tactical battles are also not my thing in a empire strat game. I much prefer the rules of engement style and let the computer run the battles.. alla Stars the Battle VCR in Stars! Supernova Genesis is really great (Hope they get funding to finish it). ANd I have yet to land an invasion force in MoO3 waiting on that.. hopefully i will tonight. My Klackon's need to invade an evon world as its a great chokepoint to the rest of my empire. (yeah i know klackons aren't for diplomatic but I''m only on hour 9 of climbing outta the learning pit, and one must learn warfare before one can avoid it)

One more thing... do we still get to see the alien scientist present all the techs? Ah... I think I'm going to go play MoO1..

I don't think many people thought RFTS was all that great a game. I don't think it did very well, and SSG seemed to abandon the game at the end when the public rejected the game. I know I was very disappointed in it, as it seemed to be a remake of the original to all too great of an extent, and missed alot of improvements made to the 4X genre since the original. For example, the diplomacy was awful - no trading of techs, no spying, etc. And colony and tech development was overly simplistic for my tastes. Another missed opportunity :(

The diplomatic AI in Moo3 is absolutely abysmal from what I've seen. I've played 3 short games so far, and during each one there's always an empire that EVERY TURN either declares war on you, or ends the war. Every turn. Constantly toggling back and forth from war to peace irritates me so much that I declare war on them. Despite the fact that I now WANT the war, the enemy is mystically able to end the war every other turn anyway.

Also, enemies periodically send you a message saying "You'd better stop what you're doing!", with no explanation at all about what they're talking about.

I got really discouraged when it would announce that a war was over. As if I had no say in the matter.

I have a thought on this war business.. It might be like in Europa Universalis 2.
If you are at war with another nation, but there is no open hostility, for example combat, then the war is ended after a certain amount of time due to lack of interest between the two combatants..
If the AI in Moo3 declares war on you because he finds you a bit annoying but he doesn´t have the means to attack you, the war will end after a certain time, but as he still annoyed by you he will still declare war.

Just my thoughts..

I played it a bit and have put lotts of time figuring out what makes MOO3 tick. It is not bad but it would be better if there was some decent documentation. Now you dont know why things happen exactly.
The learning curve is ridiculous. I was dissapointed by it.

I returned my copy of MOO3 today. Even after giving it plenty of time and knowing what I was in for I couldn't justify the money. I wanted to like it but it has no entertainment value for me.

:(

Sorry to say I didn't like MOO3. I loaded it, played around with it and several hours later was still having no fun.

Loaded up old Alpha Centauri last night and it's still fun!

I'm looking forward to GalCiv!

That's interesting, cause after my disappointment with MOO3 I had a craving for Alpha Centauri.
