Good post about moo3 vs GalCiv

This is a great post comparing the 2 games. Worth a read.

i think many moo players are expecting something different in galciv. i don't want moo flamers here after release. galciv is about building a space-fairing civ. it's not about designing ships. i like the space battles in galciv watching the photons and phasers and stuff go off.

but i get the nagging feeling that some moo players are thinking that galciv is what moo 3 was supposed to be. it's not. galciv is what galciv was supposed to be. they are very different games.

i've got both moo 3 and galciv. galciv is a much better game all round. not just because it's more fun. it has more depth than moo 3. numbers aren't depth. it has more strategic options. but it isn't moo 2.5.

I think the fact that GalCiv is going to appear as more of a finished product with ongoing support "out of the box" from its developers will cull a lot of the flames.

Also, without the massive hype engine that MOO3 had, I don't see GalCiv claiming to be a lot more than it (probably) is. I think you'll get what you see, and then some, and it will be a worthwhile purchase.

I'm looking forward to GalCiv. I'd love to see the game that MOO3 was "supposed" to be eventually come out, but I think GalCiv is going to be a game I can enjoy for quite a while, and I only really need one game to play at a time anyway.

galciv doesn't come with an alarm clock. i thought moo's inclusion of that was pretty presumptuious. later i was just p'd off that they spent time programming in an alarm clock for you instead of making an ai.

galciv not being buggy is a big advantage. the public beta helped there. i think things would have gone very differently if they hadn't had an open to the public beta to help quash bugs early on.

Yeah, if QS would have realized "Oh, no one gives a crap what Harvesters look like" and just had an open beta (with WAY more people than the 25 the had) it could have been a good game. Although, I'm only assuming it's not good from what everyone is saying, and this with the full knoledge that I'll still pick it up the first time I see it and probably like it... yeah.

I never heard of Moo3 before I came to this site, and now I'm really glad I hadn't. Phew, dodged that bullet.

It's kind of ironic given that a starbase is on the cover of the GalCiv box but starbases were a beta tester invention, not from us. Same for galactic resources, fleets, make peace with..

I hate to say it, but GC would be a much weaker game had it not been for the beta.

The beta testers really screamed for the "Make peace with.." feature for instance. A way for the diplomat strategist to get an alien to make peace with another alien. That was something we resisted for awhile because, it was a pain to code, but I use it all the time now.

And I won't even get into the fleet debate. I was against that feature at first but now I use it constantly.

we didn't scream much :) we were VERY LOUD...that's all :)

I don't know how you did it. you syntasized the best stuff the beta testers wrote about with you vision of galciv and we got to where we are today, the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

rich

hope all of you at stardock get some rest soon
