Influence

How does this work exactly. In the games I played the opponents gain influence like crazy. Mine only gets smaller. I build buildings which increase influence and try to build starbases. Nothing helps. The enemy gets stronger and stronger.

Can anybody help explain what I am doing wrong??

Getting the Influence Resources is VERY important. In my experience, you really need at least one Military and one Influence resource to be competitive late in the game. If someone declares war on you, find and target their starbases first and try to capture the resources.

Also, make sure that you try to build the Influence Wonders (Galactic Exhibition, Restaurant of Eternity, etc.), as these raise the influence of your entire civ.

Best of luck!

Is Influence like Culture in Civ3?

Yes. Though taken in a different direction.

To use Civ as the analogy, imagine if you could build structures on your "borders" that would magnify your culture and hence expand your borders? That you could proactively go after other cities in this way via culture rather than just building more temples and such. That is how influence works with GalCiv with regards to star bases.
