Random event ideas here...

Well here's some random event ideas we've had that we hope to put into the bonus pak. But we want to hear from you. What kinds of events would you like to see and if they're doable, we'll try to get them into the bonuspak and you'll be able to play them on the day the game comes out.

Here are some of ours:

#1 Galactic Plague. (Odds: 1 in 2000 turns or 1 out of every 5 games played).
A plague hits the galaxy with the effect of slowing population growth each month and slowly starting to actually cause a population crash. When this event occurs, a new technology appears available to all players. If they research it, the plague goes away -- for everyone. But it's very expensive so players can eitehr gamble that an AI player will go and take care of it or they can take care of it themselves.

#2 Ultimate Power. (Odds: 1 in 3000 aka 1 out of every 8 games played).
This is similar to #1 except it has a drastically different effect. A technologys hows up to STOP the ultimate power. For you see, as long as it's active, each month the major civilization that is weakest gets 5 points added each month to one of their 30 abilities. Some of those abilities are pretty meaningless but others are pretty important. So you can sit back and let them become hyper powerful or you can put a stop to it (or an other player can put a stop to it.

Event: League of Nonaligned Worlds splits apart and gears for war.

This event depends on if there is a League already. The event itself is just a news event which creates 2 Leagues which are now at war with each other. They stay at war with each other until one League wins. Once the event takes place and there are 2 leagues, any major civ could stay neutral or pick sides(by funding one side or allying with it). Once you have made a choice then you cannot switch sides, i.e. if you give warships to, or ally with one side, you are automatically banned from allying or helping the other side in anyway. If the side you pick wins then they will have good relations with you, but if the other side wins then they will not like you at all. If you stay neutral then it’s 50/50 either way.

Event #100. A near-omnipotent being named "Yobgorf" (frogboy, backwards) enters the galaxy and declares all violence to be immoral. He communicates instantaneously with all races on all transmission devices.

With a single wave of his hand, he destroys all weapon-carrying ships in the galaxy.

He then moves onto the next galaxy. Since there are billions of galaxies in the universe, he is not expected to return anytime soon.

Event: MoO3 was just released in this sector.
- 1/3 your population loves it gets addicted.
- 1/3 pop. hates it, flame war ensues.
- 1/3 pop. don't know what MoO3 is, awaiting "Deer Hunter XIII"

Do you:

1 - love it, declare a national holiday to allow all to play.
. - (morale++ / unrest-- / productivity--)

2 - hate it, force people back to work, join the flame war.
. - (productivity++ / morale-- / unrest++)

3 - people differ, don't take sides, continue to wait for GalCiv
. - (influence++ / productivity-- / unrest++)

Galactic fuel shortage: for a duration no new projects, ships, bases can be constructed (existing projects can be finished) and ship movement is made finite. i.e if a ship can only move 5 squares, sectors or whatever once it has spent that 5 points it is immobile until the fuel crisis is over.

A. The rise of the King of Pop

+(whatever) on culture & influence, as every other alien race falls in love with the music of the King of Pop.

+(whatever)% on Trade with everyone, as they just can't get enough of the CDs of the King of Pop (and other merchandising items, of course.)

A fleet is spawned representing the King of Pop (and his groupies or whatever). See next item...

B. The King of Pop goes on a Universe Tour

This spawns a fleet of ships that visits various stars and/or starbases all over the galaxy. Whenever the tour fleet lands on a place (to hold a concert), productivity drops -YY% for the duration of the stay.

If the planet/starbase was attacked & successfully destroyed with the King of Pop in it, the race that did the attacking will have its popularity plunge by -ZZ%. Probably half of the universe will suddenly declare war on that race.

Hmmm, if you can frame the murder on another race...hee hee hee...

C. The King of Pop renounces singing career, becomes religious fanatic!

-(whatever)% culture & trade advantages you were getting from A.

-(more)% culture & influence, if the formerly-known-as-King starts going around denouncing your empire for one reason or another...

On the other hand, killing his fleet now might be OK...haven't thought about this yet...

This thread is getting too long much too quickly for anyone trying to follow all of the threads here to do more than skim, but I saw one missunderstanding without seeing any attempt to set it straight. If I missed the correction, I apologize.

There are many kinds of events.

1). Those that happen when a planet is colonized. The affects are to the planet and/or the empire.

2). Random events that affect a planet that is already colonized.

3). Random events that affect an empire galaxy wide based on the player's response.

4). Random events that affects all of the empires in the galaxy.

5). Random events that introduce a task or objective that any empire can take on, with random consequences until the task is completed. (As an example, there is a "space monster" that will appear once in several games that starts attacking ships, star bases, and planets it can reach until it is distroyed.)

And perhaps some kinds of events I have forgotten or just not seen yet.

An unasuming computer game is released by a company of unknown origin with an advanced AI capable of mimicing player behavior. It becomes extremely popular however each copy's AI begins to mimic its players so well as to achieve sentience. The varous beings coalese into one bi polar super being with tendencies toward the extremes of morality.
-A new minor race is created (sort of a collective/ society of individuals)
-Massive empire wide morale boost
-Cash bonus
-Free tech

Hey I think I have a real good idea. Especially since you plan to keep development going at some level for the next year.

How about a slider to determine how many/percent-of humor events will take place durring our games.

I love humor. Others want straight melodrama. Infact somedays I lean very heavy one way or the other. If you include this I will name my first born Stardck.
Darn it I did it again! I looked at it twice and I thought I spelled it Stardock. I have TIA that effect my language skills.

I *just* noticed what my alias was. (I registered a year ago...)

With that in mind, I should have said "Lynn Minmey" instead of "King of Pop" in my suggestion. LOL ;p

In which case, the capital ship that carries Minmey to battle would have some sort of defense bonus, 'cos her song would be broadcast in the vincinity, causing massive confusion & karaoke-ness on the enemy.

On random events requiring some intervention by the player, with possibly disastrous consequences if ignored ...

Disclaimer: I haven't played any GalCiv, so some of these suggestions may not fit the game.

Context: I'm a Nuclear Physicist, and have encountered a number of people who regard Nuclear Physics as *bad* and never mind what the numbers say. At least some times, this opposition appears to fundamentally irrational; and/or based in fear of the unknown. At least some attempts to address these fears have backfired; the more care and caution used in building and operating large nuclear facilities, the more the public thinks such facilities are dangerous. Even people capable of doing the numbers themselves may fail to put things into perspective. Frankly, to be collectively *stupid* is very very human!

Similar phenomena affect research into genetic modification, and stem-cell manipulation, for varying reasons, including religious/ethical motivations, the validity of which depends on one's perspective.

Application to GalCiv:
A group arises that objects to one or a group of technologies. This may be confined to one planet, or civilization-wide. It may start small and then spread. It may have originated from or been fed by alien espionage/disruption efforts. It is most likely to apply to technologies which are 'strange' in context - dealing with things humans cannot see, interact with, or readily imagine, or dealing with biological/spiritual issues where religion might take a stand. Such technologies should generally be recently researched or just open to new research.

Possible Consequences:
Increased maintenance costs of planetary improvements depending on these technologies. (The locals are sabotaging them.)
Decreased morale on planets where these improvements exist.
Destruction of these improvements. (More serious.)
Increased popularity of the political party most likely to reject the technologies.
Inability to pursue further research that depends upon the technology to which the protesters object. (Depending on how GalCiv orders its tech, this might not be sensible, since shutting off access to two or three techs may be minor, but if there is a tightly interwoven tech tree this might shut off all future development past a certain point, which could be lethal.) A milder form of this could be simply increased difficulty in researching such techs.

Remedies:
Construction of social projects relating to education of populace (In Civ, this would mean libraries and universities.)
Increased spending on morale/political campaigning.

I would like to say that I love random events, BUT ...
I don't like bad events when the game is in his early stages. I hope you agree with me that you don't want your first warship/colony ship (that you've worked on a zillion turns) to disappear because of a random event.

About the supernova or nova event: in the reality, when that happen, the system is destroy and the nova emit deadly radiation and those radiation can reach systems away of many light-years(around 50).
So, this event should be negative, destroy the system where that happen and lower the population grown or destroy all life on the nearest planets, few years after the Supernova.

Other possible event, some ship defect and become pirate or joint another species.

Event: there is too much scraps in orbit of a planet: lower the trade income, lower shipyard production

DragonSister I suspect in a GAME, these issues will lend themselves to be more like

"Said corporation to reeducate employes via brain implants that nuclear waste stored in local comunity will increase labido."

But if you care enough, and if the game becomes very popular, you should easly be able to create a more serious and to your way of thinking socially responcible view point, in senerios where such issues will be of rational relavence. :) Nice to see some females in here.

How about a very rare event that a ship finds a stable wormwhole to another galaxy, which could either bring first contact to a far away species (new techs and whatever) or an armada constantly coming from the wormhole until someones destroyes the ships and the wormwhole itself.

How about the introduction of a terrorist movement that does something to a very important structure in the game (like 9/11). It would be neat actually to control such as terrorist group and have them do things while there actions aren't being associated with your empire.

sivlardemalle -- Agreed. It wouldn't surprise me if at least some events had a minimum turn number on which they could arrive.

This might be too much of a win/win situation, but a piece of information that could destabalize another empire falls in your lap. The player has the choice whether or not apply the info. If used, destabalizes the empire to some random amount, if not, relations improve with that empire.

planet landing event:

A small colony of people have a functional fusion plant. Do you:
a) (good) Leave them in peace (-% pop).
b) (neutral) Buy the plant from them (-X BC, free fusion plant)
c) (evil) Loot the colony and take the fusion plant by force( +X BC, free fusion plant)

you find an abandonned shuttle. you can choose to search it and you can find good things/bad things.

a) the shuttle is rigged to explode
b) pilot from an ancient race (salvage parts for money, gain new tech)

stuff like that.

An unknown alien space craft of advanced technology visits your capital. The alien asks to buy weapons so that it may eradicate its enemies. Do you:

a>(good) Refuse to sell them weapons and offer to help them negotiate a peaceful solution to their conflict.
- Response: You are most wise, accept this (technology) as a gift.
b>(neutral) Offer to sell them any weapons they want.
- Response: Only a fool provides weapons to an angry child, we shall leave.
c>(evil) Offer to help them eradicate their enemies in exchange for new technolgoy.
- Response: You primitive humans have evil in your heart, we shall leave.
