favorite strategy games of all time

what are you favorite strategy games in order for all time? ones that you have actually played so don't say galciv is one unless you've got to play it.

here is my list

galciv has a special trait beyond all these games. i have played galciv betas for month and the game still feels new and fresh each time. the ai, the way that the universe just makese sense.

galciv is a thousand tiny nice touches put together that are greater than the sum of its parts.

Europa Universalis 2

(Does an amazing job of having events follow the logic of the historical period presented, without forcing them to absolutely follow history as it happened.)

King of Dragon Pass

(Does a brilliant job of presenting a deep and well-constructed mythical Bronze Age culture and requiring you to think inside it in order to succeed. To win, you need to learn to *think* like an Orlanthi.)

The old mid-80s CGA color game: Art of War.

I played it for YEARS on my old 8088.

One from the early 90's: The Perfect General

Not sure if you would call it a Strategy game though.

Asarokop: Loved the AAW games... always used the tactic of maxxing out my archers before seiging a castle. Never failed. Man, that was *so* long ago.

Hmmmmmmmm.

- Master of Orion II (SimTex). I never played the original, 'tho.
- Dominions (fairly obscure game by Illwinter), which lets me be _truly_ evil if I feel like it. Pillaging, leprosy spells, blood sacrifice and demon contracts, oh my!
- Civ II (Microprose), probably Test of Time, although the lousy pathing and idiotic auto-settler AI grates me.
- Strategic Conquest (Mac; don't recall who), and the frequently similar, but more versatile, Xconq (Stan Shebs, others).
- Lords of Conquest (ancient EA-distributed game).
- Bolo (the AppleTalk game by Stuart Cheshire (sp?)).
- Netrek (the coordinating and planning interested me more than the dogfighting, really. OK, so this one is a stretch.).
- The Ancient Art of War. Classic. Configurable, detailed, and clever. Unlike most so-called real-time strategy games, it was truly STRATEGIC and not tactical.
- Incunabula: now we're talking PRIMITIVE. (BASIC game by Avalon Hill).

Various others that have already been mentioned are on my list, too. EU2 probably the one that stands out to me most. Though the original Civ was great fun, and Sim City too...

3. conquest frontier wars (i did manual labor to earn forty bucks to buy this game and now you can get it for 3.41 at electronic boutique. :notsure: )
4. Birth of the Federation ( if you used your imagination it was a fun game)
5. SMAC (only got to play through it once, let a friend borrow it and he never gave it back. (:( )
