favorite strategy games of all time

favorite strategy games of all time

what are you favorite strategy games in order for all time? ones that you have actually played so don't say galciv is one unless you've got to play it.

here is my list

here are my rankings:

#1 galciv
#2 SMAC (after patches)
#3 MOO 1
#4 Civ 2
#5 SMGettysburgh
#6 MOO 2
#7 Medieval: Totalware
#8 civ 3
#9 HOMM 3
#10 Age of Wonders 2

galciv has a special trait beyond all these games. i have played galciv betas for month and the game still feels new and fresh each time. the ai, the way that the universe just makese sense.

galciv is a thousand tiny nice touches put together that are greater than the sum of its parts.

1)King of Dragon Pass (incredible depth and flavor)
2)SMAC (great AI)
3)Colonization (best of Sid's efforts)
4)MOO2 (best micromanagement game ever!)

Beginning to see any pattern?

Wonder why nobody has MOO3 #1? ;)

1. Space Empires 4
2. MOO2
3. Championship Manager 01/02
4. HOM3

I think Galciv will at least compete with the # 1 place, based on how much I like the beta. And yes, I will give MOO3 a try, just today received my copy (UK version released on March 7), including an installed mod from the MOO3 forums. We'll see if it can compete.

I tried to buy MOO3 yesterday in the UK and could not find it. HMV did not bother ordering it, Virgon didn't bother either and Game had sold out of the few copies they had bought. This was in London and I checked about 8 stores! Very strange!

I went into Gme the morning it was released (in Leeds). Personally, I wouldn't say you've missed much. Watch the IG forums to see if the opinion changes for the better after the patch.

I played KODP, and it was... interesting. Personally, I found it had too much reading. But it's definitely nice to see a different approach, and the writing was good.

Turn-based, not rts

1. moo2
2. eu2 (i know, not really turn-based, but closer to turn based than rts)
3. homm3 (4 sucks! it's the moo3 syndrome)
4. civ3

I hope to be putting galciv in #1 soon

TBS only. I don't do well with RTS.

1). GC/Win
2). GC/OS2
3). Civ 2 (hate CIV3)
4). Moo2 (not ready to try moo3).
5). Alpha Century

Actually I found the EU2 info-popup-system quite excellent, fully customizable and easy to handle, everytime you got a "Uszbakala has gained 1000 infantery" you just right clicked in the window and choose "Dont show this crap" again! It was GREAT!

DAMN! I posted my message in the WRONG THREAD! Hmm, could someone delete this? it shouldt be here ;)

I blame it on the late hour, the worst thing is that I dont even remember that I switched to this thread LOL

*insert mumbled wishes that Koei would release updated, English PC versions of the Three Kingdom games*

I also neglected to mention Atomic Games' "Close Combat II". I loved that game for its intensity and lovely, detailed maps... but I also loathed that game for its crack-addicted vehicle pathfinding and its mind-numbingly-repetitive German campaign.

Here is my top 5 overall:

1. Civ (1,2,3)
2. Dune 2
3. Moo 1&2
4. RA1 & C&C (in my first list I ment to say RA1)
5. Warlords 2

Playing C&C Genreals right now and having a blast.. I would put it up in the top 5 but it just came out and I am un sure if it's there yet. For graphics I would say it's the best over all though. I also feel that Rise of Nations could be up there if they do it right.. heres hoping! Go Brian!

I'm waiting for Rise of Nations, and Republic: The Revolution. GalCiv I was lucky to find only a month before it came out, while I've been waiting for the other 2 for a year.

I'm fascinated that NO ONE mentioned Stars!, which is quite possibly the root of most of the Windows turn-based space strategy games. :notsure:
