Strategy games that should inspire GalCiv?

So what games do you like that you think would be a good inspiration for Galactic Civilizations?

I'd start with Civilization, Masters of Orion, Europa Universalis.

Well for me I'd include Civ and MOO but also Warlords, HOMM, and the board game Twlight Imperium.

we need to incorporate resource gathering, ependable AND renewable into the economics and production areas

CIV3 has that, but I'm not sure I like it. If you run out of a critical resource don't your
chances of winning dissapear?

You know there is one more game we should look at even though it's not your ordinary Strategy game. I feel something can be learned from a game like Black & White as well. I mean the whole think with your hand (cursor) changing to red as you turned evil was a really cool concept.

Not technically a strategy game but Star Control II was one of my favorite games and really made what was essentially an action strategy game have a truly epic feel.

I like SMAC except for the technologies but otherwise found it very satisfying. Civ3 is really good though and serves as a mdoel to other developers - they keep updating it after release.

I vote
MOO - epic feel
MOO2 - epic feel, race choosing
Pax Imperia - feel, diplomancy, spying
Ascendancy - race variation
Birth of the Federation - minor races, universe feel
Europa Universalis - empire building

I would vote against any form of resource gathering, with the possible exception of something like BOTF (dilithium crystals) which was a great way to control ship expansion.

Personally, I would rather see GalCiv inspiring other games.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Stars! as
a game worthy to take a look at - another
space exploration/4X game with an active
online multiplayer community. It's quite
a few years old and still going strong
(partly out of necessity as the sequel
got delayed - perhaps indefinitely), so
there should be something worthwhile there.

I'm not suggesting stealing ideas, but take
a look at the design decisions made for the
new game (Stars! Supernova), they could give
you some ideas what to include and what
to avoid. I especially like their ideas
about trying to avoid micro-management (e.g.
move colonists/trade goods explicitly vs.
letting the market/trade guild/population
satisfaction take care of it).

After visiting Gamespot the other day, i came across GalCiv, and i must say i was quite impressed :)

After comparing it to the much anticipated Masters of Orien 3, i can say with confidence, that the graphics dont even compared with those of GalCiv (which in my opinion, are far superior).

I was greatly surprised and impressed with what ive seen and read about Galactic Civilization, and connot wait to see what else is in store for what looks like to be a great game.
