Do you wish to help the developers ? Buy the game DIRECTLY!

While the game will cost a little more to buy here there will be a huge difference in the amount that goes directly to the developers. Judging from Brad Wardell ( frogboy ) articles, the difference might be as high as about 30$ for each sold game.

Now what Brad is trying to do has to my knowledge never been done before. Trying to create and update a game similar to a utility software by continuing the development after it goes gold. The end result, if successful, would mean guarantied development of a game we all might love. And this development done with the highest regard to what we the customers wish to have. I don't know about you guys but I love the idea.

So if you agree with me, then dig deep into your pockets. :)

How does that work? Can I buy the game now and download it on the 26th with a purchase key of some kind?

Actually, the best way to help the developer if that's your primary goal is probably to buy the $69.95 drengin.net subscription (you get GalCiv + a bunch of older Stardock games + any other games Stardock makes in the next year). I think I read that you don't get sent the CD if you purchase it this way.

If you simply buy the $45 GalCiv game direct from Stardock, they still send you the full boxed version, just as if you bought it in a store (which means the publisher, Strategy First, probably still gets a cut). (But I might be wrong here :p - a lot depends on the particular agreement between Stardock and SF.)

I was under the impression that the actual CD sending was optional ( I for one do not wish to pay the extra cost of the shipment ). I might also be mistaken.

Yeah Strategy First would get a cut from the boxed version since they are the ones printing it.

Yes, Stardock will make more $$ off a direct purchase than a copy bought at a retailer, but think of this: if the retailer doesn't sell very many copies they may remove it from their shelves, hampering sales in the future. Additionally, it could also discourage them from stocking Stardock games in the future. Whereas if the opposite happened (i.e. retailers sold a ton) then it could make Stardock a respected name among retailers and could help with future game distribution.

Just a thought.

Very true, ringlord... But my guess would be that the main thing is just for the thing to sell like gangbusters regardless of which channel... :)

Gotta agree with the retail angle here. Just SPREAD the word on this game and BUY IT! I'm buying the retail version, I like physical and shiny objects.

I'm buying the retail version as a result of $5. That's 2 loads of laundry, you know!
