Based on the # of successful downloads and now submissions to the metaverse database (not posted scores), things seem to be going relatively smoothly.

Unfortunately, us beta testers, ironically our biggest supporters, are the ones who have suffered the most with the shake out. Good thing we did the final testing of SDCEntral yesterday and not today like originally envisioned. Phew!

well this is good; I am still trying to download the game file; it tells me that I have downloaded currently 85.31/84.50 mb (yes more than the file size)& I have 71.5 MILLION minutes estimated time remaining

yes I have the newest stardock central file

I have been trying for close to 21 hours to download an 84.5 meg file....

Jeremy, I don't know if this will help you, but 71.5 million minutes from now, when your done with the first download, you may want to switch your server to "US-Califonia" ( TOOLS-SETTINGS-CONNECTION), then refresh your application data (under the TOOLS menu again). The cali server is running pretty fast right now.

Jeremy,

One thing I noticed is that after I installed the latest version of Stardock Central and was able to start successfully installing the packages (I was getting extraction errors on the downloaded packages before this), I needed to download a second time the packages I tried to install that I had already downloaded (WindowBlinds, for example). This wasn't a big deal for the Object Desktop stuff (small files), but it was a drag for the Multimedia package (I still have about 70 mb to go on the 2nd attempt at downloading it.)

For some reason, the % counter did not start over, and goes to 200% complete when the download is actually finished. I think this is an artifact of the previous version interacting with the new version. It is my "guess" that new items you try to download (that you hadn't already tried to download) will show the proper time remaining, % complete, etc.

I hope that helps. Have faith...once the size downloaded "doubles" the size of the original, the download will complete. It is just a display error for you at this time (I think).

I find this entire process to be very confusing and non-intuitive... however, I imagine much of the fault lies with me as most other Stardock users seem to be having no problems (not a caustic remark, rather an honest assessment that I just don't understand the Stardock Central concept)...

My confusion stems from the Drengin.net and Stardock Central sites... Do we need Stardock to access Drengin and therefore the "incremental updates"? Furthermore, if we don't download Stardock it is my understanding we will not be able to access "incremental updates". However, to access the updates from Stardock Central you have to click on the Drengin tab/link anyway, so why not just bypass Stardock Central and access Drengin from the GalCiv.com site? By going directly to Drengin from GalCiv, what updates/features will I not be able to access? In other words, what is the purpose of Stardock, other than a central location from which to access forums, Drengin, etc. My main concern is I want to be sure I have access to all updates, incremental or otherwise.

BTW, kudos to you Frogboy for creating such a deep, interesting game. The passion you have for GalCiv is obvious and both seem to be an extremely well-crafted game. Brings to mind the early years of Microprose when Sid was still full of vim and vigor.

Again, my rant is not intended to be a criticism, rather I am just frustrated by not understanding the Stardock Central concept.

Thanks (in advance) for your help.

Good news. Just like Carl, updating to RC1 fixed the problem for me. Granted, I had to download the entire multimedia package again as it didn't work on the existing archive, but it's working now. That's the important part.

Thanks for the help

Let me ask about some of these.

Updating from betas/RCs is definitely not something you'll want to do. But yea, if you haven't literally downloaded and installed RC1 you are likely to run into some issues.

We had problems last night (that's putting it mildly) and we put in all sorts of safety features that exist on both client and server. So make sure you click on the downloads section and install RC1 of Stardock Central.

Let me guess--it's the third version of the game that cows are always advertising. :-)

Problems? Last night? I thought all the people that witnessed that were . . .

Oops! I was responding to the last post on the first page, and didn't notice that there were two more pages, so my already weak joke is incomprehensible now!

As probably mentioned before it would be great if the download and archive option would support resuming. I've had the multimedia packagage restart three times now, one of which was alreayd at 95%. That is a bit silly really. :notsure:
Maybe it's possible to access the stardock files with an FTP client? I've never had problems resuming with ftp. Or is that too insecure?
This is what I understand so far:
-You can download the game to an archive and install from that or you can install directly.
-Installing directly supports resume.
-Downloading to an archive does not support resume.
-After installing a game (or part) you can archive that part for backup.

This leads me to the idea that it is best to direcly install any download and archive it after installation.
Does that lead to the same kind of archive as the one you can download?

I also saw a question about downloading for a friend. The downloaded archives I have contain my registration information so the only good way to share with a friend is to change the registry information in the ini file in the archive to your friend's info. Otherwise he should not be able to install your download. (just a hunch)

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think SDCentral MUST have the option to automatically resume after timeout.

I cannot sit at the keyboard for the 24+ hours it will take to download the game waiting for the timeout popup message to appear so I can press "resume".

Nothing is more frustrating than leaving your computer on and connected all night only to come in the morning to see it has timed out 2 minutes after you've gone to sleep.

When i download it does not install in dedired path. As far as I can see it installs it inthe temp directory of Stardock is this correct?

Hi. New to this whole thing, and I have a question. I bought the game, downloaded and installed Stardock all last night, and downloaded all the GalCiv files via Download and Archive. Now I'm trying to install the game from archive, and I unzipped the files, but I don't see anything like a setup executable. All that I get in the bottom directory of the unpacking is data.ini and gc1.xml.

So I tried hitting 'install' under GalCiv on Stardock, but it's like the app is unaware that I downloaded it already, and I don't want to download the whole 460MB again to install it.

What am I missing here?

If you right click on the component you want to install, ---> Archive ---> Restore Existing, might do the trick.

Thanks much, Phil. That was it, exactly. Something I was missing, just as I suspected. :)

Update on my situation: Looks like it doesn't fix the problem, or at least, not completely. After installing the multimedia I closed the SDCentral app, then reopened it later only to learn that it no longer recognized galciv - or any of it's components - as installed. Reinstall from archive didn't work, so I was forced to download and install EVERYTHING again, only to have it fail on a "deleted file" in the multimedia pack, as before.

So basically, RC1 doesn't fix the problem.

The restore of the multimedia file is not working right now (at least it bugged me yesterday). I think Stardock knows about this.

The good news is that if you do a regular install it does work, but it downloads the mm file again. Then the whole game runs fine.

Unfortuntely, no, if I do a regular install it does NOT work. I left it running a regular install overnight and the same error ocurred.

To reiterate, I am running Stardock Central RC1. The base install of galciv is working, as is the bonus pack. The multimedia STILL FAILS and reports the following error in the log file

-- [Installation] ---------------------------------------------------
Loading: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\gc1.xml
Result: Success
Loading: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\installed\gc1.xml
Result: Success
Installation aborted (failed)
