FAQ: SDCentral registration and other issues

If you have any problems with Stardock Central, let us know.

One issue that we've seen already is the question of registering products.

If you purchased GalCiv, it is important to put the serial # into the GalCiv entry and NOT in the Drengin.net entry. Similarly, if you purchased Drengin.net don't put it into the GalCiv one.

And obviously don't put your serial number into both, otherwise it will fail validation.

Here is a screenshot to help guide you along:

I'm having a problem logging into the stardock servers, I get an error message saying

"Your Stardock.net account (email) has failed to log on to the Stardock Central servers. Since you are not currently logged on to the server you will be unable to install or view any updates that are available."

I have downloaded the latest RC1 version of Stardock Central. I know my email and password information is correct, I've tried reinstalling and everything I can think of.

Any Ideas?

I get the same thing as mrpepsi...

I purchased Beta. Just upgraded SDC when I got the e-mail. I get the "login failed" message... I have checked and rechecked my account info in the account info section... but no dice.

The weird thing is, if I go to "Register Products" and put my serial # into the GalCiv section (with same account info) it tells me my product registered. (But nothing other than the popup happens)

I can also log onto the chat... and see the discussion sections.

But the software does not appear.

I have the software firewall from XP enabled... but am not using a proxy or anything. Broadband connection, if that matters.

I seem to have fixed my problem... or it was fixed by the "Powers that Be"?

Well what I did:

1) Inkove my right to post on Galciv Forums using e-mail + password (never done before)
2) Post (see above)
3) Remove EVERYTHING Stardock/Drenghin/Galciv Related
4) Reinstall SDC RC1 from e-mail link
5) Correct Acccount Password (had tried different ones thinking I had changed it)
6) Login worked, said to reboot...
7) Downloading now...

atholbrose,

You need to configure proximitron to accept(trust) sdcentral.stardock.com and sdcentral2.stardock.com
Reply #30 Top
TJL1,
Yes, the default for SDC is to use IE's settings, which is the standard.. If necessary you can also configure SDC to explicity use specific settings. But in the case of Proximtron, it needs to be configured to trust our servers.

mrpepsi,
Just to verify, use this link to have your password sent to you. Then using that information go into "Edit Stardock.net Account" and re-enter your email and password.

T-Man, you're missing his point. No matter WHAT you put into SDC's proxy settings, it just uses the IE ones. So if I have a proxy set in IE, but NOT in SDC, it uses the proxy. If I don't set one in IE, but I do in SDC, it doesn't use the proxy.

I don't use a proxy myself normally, but I set one up on my home network to test this problem, and I verified this. The proxy settings in SDC do nothing - the program ignores them in favor of the ones set in IE.

(:( Help please. New user (not beta etc) - fresh install. Put DreginNet serial in (a DN number), seems to like me. Downloaded GC seperately, from the rego email. Now when I try to install GC, it won't accept the serial number (the DN number). I don't seem to be able to get a different serial no for GC: what do I do?
Do the Tools->lookup serial number from Stardock Central or the support page. The email will now have a *different* DN number specifically for GalCiv - that one worked for me - yay!

Got it - thanks guys - I was using the email address I gave for administrative emails, not the user account one. Doh.

Newer issue...
Just installed SDC RC1 and am attempting to download and archive my copy of GalCiv (right clicking on GavCiv, or using CTRL+D)...SDC freezes, then quits without warning.

Windows 2000
DSL
Netgear router with NAT
No funky proxy software on the machine.

Okay, the question begs then... what do we lose when our Drengin.net accounts expire? Access to news, chat, metaverse, what?

~SDC~

When you DN account expires you loose access to just the Drengin.net Network. Which means that you will not be able to get any new games that are released under Drengin.net or updates to existing games.

~SDC~

So does that mean the end of support for games that you already bought and paid for? (i.e. when you say no more updates to existing games) That's a pretty significant downside to investing in games from this company if your support ends just like that.

Mind you, I see lots of plus side elements this company has to offer, but I severely dislike them cutting off support until you fork over more dough.

~SDC~
No. I didn't say we cut off support. You just do not get updates to our software or new software. Beside, how many companies out there provide support for games after a year anyway?

So if your account expires on 3/26/2004 and we come out with a new update for GalCiv on 3/27/2004 then you will not be able to download that update unless you renew your subscription. We will have a process for renewing your subscription but I do not know what the price break will be for that yet.

Well, EVERY game company I have dealt with so far releases updates and patches to EVERYONE who previously bought their software. When they stop making the patches, they stop for everyone as well.

Again, I should make it clear that I am very pleased with the support this company has offered to date, and the responsiveness which you guys have in addressing concerns. I think much of it is groundbreaking, right in line with Bioware regarding Neverwinter Nights. What I would not want to see is a groundbreaking reversal in the opposite direction. I can see that maybe you wouldn't be able to download patches and updates as frequently, not being on Drengin.net, but I would at least expect the occasional compiled update as a separate d/l from GalCiv's website. I'm not ruling out that I won't continue to pay for Drengin.net in the future if the price is reasonable, I'm just voicing my concern over the support and updating of a software game I have already paid for.

At any rate, I won't belabor the point as some people do, constantly complaining about prices, costs, etc. I'm a firm believer in the Capitalist system. If I'm satisified with a service / product, I will pay, if not, I won't. That's what makes this system work. Thanks for the consideration you have given my concerns.

So, what's the scoop if you buy the GalCiv box? It would be quite unusual to only have a yearly support contract, as it were, for a boxed product. I've gotten patches for games -years- after they were released.

Ok all I get it my serial number is invalid, which is strange since the game was ok with it. When I request a serial number I get this back 2 times:

Product Name : Stardock Central Component Manager
User Name :
Serial Number : N/A

This is just a general thing I noticed with SDCentral...

While it allows you to download the base files for GalCiv in a 'modulated' form, this doesn't appear to mean that it is resumable... A resumable download will pick up from the point it left off, even if that is in the middle of a file. SDCentral appears to pick up from the start of the last file being downloaded?? (Or the Last Module, whatever terminology you want to use) which is a real pain if you get a particularly large file and your connection cuts out in the middle of it... :(

Guess I'm being nitpicky, but being put back 2 hours waiting to play GalCiv in the early hours of the morning... I want to cry!

'While it allows you to download the base files for GalCiv in a 'modulated' form, this doesn't appear to mean that it is resumable...'

Actually, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I haven't been able to divine any sort of pattern to it.

Download and Archive does not support resume. But if you click on the Install button, that shuld support resume.

Stardock is an innovative idea and deseves praise, but it is still too unclear to the consumer.

ie I bought the game retail, installed it, downloaded Stardock and the bonus pack from GalCiv.com, installed them, opened Stardock, and found I had the 1.0.29 or whatever, and could never get the update to 1.0.3.

I read the forums, found that you shouldnt intall the bonus pack before installing Stardock, uninstalled GalCiv, uninstalled Stardock, reinstalled everything, went to stardock which now says that I "failed to validate Drengin.net registration" so I now have version 1.0.00 and stardock gives me no option to update.

What registration are they talking about? I am not a paid subscriber to Stardock, or is it Drengin.net? It is unclear, I thought I was downloading Stardock, but the Stardock tab is for a cursor. So I guess I am using Drengin.net

When i try to register using your directions on http://www.galciv.com/temp/sdex.jpg, it says I have an "invalid serial number" but the entry box also refers to an "order e-mail" so now a person is wondering, What do they want my serial number off the cd, or is Stardock or Drengin.net only for those who have

(a)a paid subscription or

(b) a downloaded version of the game that they got with a registered e-mail and a unique serial number?

You need to seperate pages for people who
1 are members of stardock, paid subscription
2 bought the game retail and would like to update
3 bought the game online and downloaded it.

ie "if you are a stardock subscription member click here" etc.

This is just madness for everyone involved. I dont know where to begin at this point. (yes i have all the appropriate boxes checked in the tools and am using the atlanta server.)

Admittedly I am not an idiotizing this procedure, I am oversiplifying for those who are unfamiliar with your program, not that I am familiar with it, but you really need to simplify things.

In any event, I love the game I just cant use your updating system.
