Yeah, I remember the good old days when a strategy war game meant having a friend over for pizza (or at least potato chips) and Coke, and breaking out a game with hundreds of little cardboard pieces, where it would take half an hour just to get all the units into their starting positions. Belonged to a small club, the "Kreigspeilers" (sp? my German is so rusty!)

That was when I learned that I'm much better at tactics than strategy. Tell me to take a hill, and you can consider it taken, but I won't know why we wanted it :) One of the few victories I had at Third Reich was a tactical victory. Went from sitting in England to having Berlin under my control and surrounded in a single turn. The German player was expecting me to liberate France, instead I focused the paratroopers on seizing the northern theater ports to eliminate the German fleets from that theater, then beachheaded every piece of british and american armor into northern Germany. Russia turns to Germany and says "Why didn't we do that during the war?" Germany (our best player) responded with "Even Hitler didn't let his arrogance blind him to that level. I left myself wide open for that by having everything split between the offensives in Russia and garrisoning France."

Happy memories. Hopefully the GalCiv AI will give me the feeling of playing against something with plans again. Haven't felt that in a long time.

38, it is nice to see I am not the graybeard of the group.
So what is the mean age of the players? The standard deviation will probably be pretty large from what I have read here.

Oh, and in case that wasn't enough of a clue, I'm about 38.8, though I've been thinking of myself as 40 for a few years, since I tend to round to the nearest decade.

Popup Target,

It also gives you a couple of years to "cushion the blow" as the various age milestones fly bye. ;)

Ya see. . . Now if you had been pretending to be (whispers) "30" for the past couple of years, the pain would be so much less. ;)

Cut my teeth on the Commodore Vic20, complete with tape drive that took some 5 minutes to load 4k ... I still remember the guy at the store saying:

"And let me tell you, there's no way you'll EVER need more than 4k!"

I stayed the Commodore course for the graphics at the time, but the photo does look familiar!

I am a newbie trying to get out of being a lurker so you might not recognize the name but you are guys are as old as dirt. I am 16, soon to turn 17, on honestly. The reason why I can post in the middle of the day is because this is my spring break... :). I was reading all of you ages and I was thinking...it must suck when you see an advertisment talking about funeral arrangements and realize they are targeting people in your age group.

I had a Spectrum 128k as my first comp, tape deck and all :) You remember when computer mags had games listed as printed lines of program BASIC code? I spent more time looking for my typing mistakes than I ever did playing the games hehe. Ah the good ole days ;)

I too had a Spectrum 48K...anyone remember anyone of Julian Gollop's games ? He's probably more famous for forming Mythos and doing "XCOM, Enemy Unknown" but he did a couple of fantastic strategy games for the Speccy, "Rebelstar Raiders" (turn based tactical combat and it's easy to see the inspiration behind the XCOM missions) and Chaos, a wizardy-type-summony-battly game. Who would've thought that such humble introductions to the world of strategy games would lead me to get up at 5:01am GMT to download this little gem ? :)

Nah. They are targeting the people who will have to pay for those funeral arrangements.

You know . . . the grand, or great grand children.

Kids about your age. ;)
