When you invade a system.

Select Traditional Warfare
then press enter quickly.

The game locks up intermittantly.

Here's something I've noticed especially at the beginning of a game. This is with auto end turn OFF. Occasionally (say once every 10 or 20 turns) when I click end turn I see the population graph update but the date does not update, nor do any spacecraft move on the screen. Clicking turn again then processes the turn normally. But it seems that sometimes something but not everything is getting updated.

Echoing Two Bugs and Two new one:

1) Trade Routes: manual says you start with 3. I can only build 2, until I get Advanced Trade, then I can build 3. Is the manual wrong?

2) Espionage/Destabilize on minor race tab stays linked to last major race selected. No sliders are available, but you can click the arrow buttons to increase and decrease. This causes the 'last major race selected' that it's connected to to change.

new ones:

3) On the Speak To screen: When I have more than 5 tech to trade (say I have 8) and scroll down to the bottom. Selecting the bottom 3 or 4 will cause the scroll mechanism to disappear, thus the other 3 techs that I could trade are no longer accessible.

4) Saved games from Retail CD do not load after patching to 1.01 and crash in the foreign policy screen when switching the race you're talking to using the right-hand icon bar or using the arrow buttons above the race pic.

Severity: Medium
Type: Hard Crash to Desktop
Game Functionality Affected: Trade Route

This is what happens. Looking at my TRADE ROUTE screen, I see one of my trade route reads "N/A" for value. Whereas the others read 7bc, 10bc, 30bc, etc. I look back on the starmap and I see that the "mini-freighter" for that particular route isn't really moving anywhere; its been sitting on the same parsec for the past couple of turns. In fact, there's another mini-freighter right beside it with an identical to/from description. Neither are moving, apparently. So i clicked "KILL ROUTE" and got rid of it. Back on the starmap, one of the minifreighters have disapeared, but the first one is still there. I click it... and bingo, hard crash to starboard.

Not sure this is a bug so much as a quirk of the game.

First game I played, I was winning via Cultural Domination.
Due to the Metaverse not updating the scores, I've been replaying the Autosave game. This resets the Cultural Domination timer so about 12 months again. So I click turn and move along, slowly gaining planets as I culturally overwhelm their parent civs.
However, because I've been replaying the Autosave a couple of times now, trying to get the score to go through, the other Civs have run out of planets, so my "cultural" victory has become a "military" victory, by virtue of the other civs having no planets left. :)
A little subroutine needs to be added to either flag planets as having been culturally assimilated, so the victory thing can tell the difference, or the victory thing needs to be able to look back a couple of turns to see what has been happening. :)

I noticed that sector cultural dominance isn't saved. I had one game where I culturally owned 56 out of 64 sectors when I decided it was time to go to bed. So I saved the game, quit, and shut down. Next day after work I loaded up the game, and my count had dropped into the 30's, with many of the missing sectors not culturally owned by anyone. I hit the turn button once, and all the sectors became owned, but now I only owned 52 out of 64 sectors. Within a few turns, I made it back to 55 sectors, but I've been hovering there for some time.

Planet Details screen has a text bug from too long of a description with no ability to scroll and see the rest of the text.

I screencapped it and made a link: (easier to understand this way :))

I think it may have been mentioned, but I'm not sure. I noticed a bug with the Senate control and quitting. I was not in control of the senate when I saved and quit. When I loaded the game again and loaded my game, I was in control of the senate. I'm not sure if this happens if you don't quit out but load a game.

There seems to be a bug when creating a colony in the same system the colony ship was built in. It allows the player to gain lots of extra population instantly.

Example:

System X has 2 planets, both good enough to support a colony. You colonize planex X1 and lets it grow for a while. Eventually, you want to colonize planet X2, so you build a colony ship on planet X1.

When the colony ship is completed, you don't have to 'launch' it, and add population from planet X1, in order to colonize planet X2. Instead you merely needs to click on planet X2 on the list of planets on the right side of the screen. Since there is a colony ship in orbit the little colony ship icon appears if you put the mouse over planet X2, letting you know you can colonize it even though no population was ever loaded on the colony ship. The colony created with this empty colony ship will have exactly the same pop as planet X1.

I've seen this happen a couple of times already. It's eassy to reproduce... try it at home.

[I have attached screencaps of this error in stardock.games.galciv.binaries]

I'm getting a strange error after the intro movies finish. 100% reproduction on my machine, and it causes the game to crash out.

This is what I've tried so far:

* Had an old beta version of GalCiv from SDC - caused this error
* Uninstalled old version of GalCiv
* Deleted old GalCiv directory
* Checked registry to make sure nothing left behind
* Installed GalCiv 1.01 from SDC
* Ran GalCiv - same errors (see binary posts)
* Uninstalled GalCiv
* Uninstalled SDC
* Installed GalCiv from the monolithic web download
* Ran GalCiv - same errors again
* Installed latest version of SDC
* Updated GalCiv to 1.01
* Ran GalCiv - same errors again

I assume that it's not a corrupt download, because the CRC checked out on the massive ZIP file I downloaded.

I'm baffled - I don't appear to be having trouble running any other software (other Drengin games are fine as well), and I think computer setup is fairly "standard" (P4, Windows XP SP-1, GeForce4, SB Live). I've tried running in 16-bit colour, as well as downloading and running the windowed version, neither with any success.

Can anyone help?

Update to #89: If I disable music in my prefs.ini GalCiv works just fine. Enabling it in the GalCiv menu causes it to crash out instantly.

Encountered a minor bug afer a UP resolution. When we go to the Foreign Policy screen, intead of the discription of the new UP policy, we have "String not found".

I've noticed that when you save a game, quit GalCiv, then reload the game the 'bc spent on espionage on this civ' numbers you get from alien civs in the Foreign Tab are off. There are huge numbers like 107xx...xx while I was only a couple years playing.

Er...dunno if this is a bug or not, but sound won't work on my system. The music is fine, but I don't get any sound fx; odd thing is I can click 'em in the folder and they play fine. There's a bit of text in the GalCiv SFX fold that says, "Pear sound files (wavs) must be 16 bit mono unsigned at 22 kHz." Anyone know if this has anything to do with it?

Otherwise, great game. Stardock = proof that slow 'n' steady wins the race.

Minor bug: There is a math error in one of the military contractors. If you work out the full cost for purchasing an item, the second contractor (Terran something) is always worse in every way than the 3rd or 4th contractor. (both more up front and WAY WAY more over time).

@ brewerd88 -- take a close look at the pop figures. I belive when you do what you describe, it automatically takes half the pop from the first planet and sticks it on the second planet. (half the pop of the planet is what loading a colony ship defaults to).

GalCiv hung up my machine when changing UI style to good. I could see the new UI, but nothing responded after it. Using W2K.

I'm running the retail version, with the 1.01 update, bonus pack, and all the extra downloads from the library page on Windows XP:

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but, whenever I colonize a system and rename it to a name of my choosing, all the planets in that system are named "Nova I", (assuming I name the system "nova"). So, all four planets will be "Nova I" rather than "Nova I", "Nova II", "Nova III", and "Nova IV".

The speed ability doesn't seem to work. Whether I choose +1 (4 points) or +2 (8 points), my ships do not move any farther per turn. Furthermore, the speed ability doesn't show up under the "Abilities" tab in the domestic policy screen.

I have run into several (minor) issues, some of which are probably due to my confusion as to the way things work.

The only one I can remember right now has to do with trade routes. There were three or four times I received a message stating that due to the fighting near a particular trade route the companies that ran it were shutting it down; when I checked my trade routes, they were all still there and bringing in cash.

I have also run into the issues with sector influence disappearing when I quit the game and come back to it later. Things straighten out eventually, but it was pretty scary the first time it happened, and it makes for some funky-looking graphs.

Speaking of graphs, the rightmost icon on the mini-graph window at the right of the main screen has what appears to be a guy in a trench coat and sunglasses, but it is labeled "Manufacturing might" or some such. Am I just seeing the picture wrong, or was it originally going to be an espionage graph or something?

One last thing, and this is regarding a design decision rather than a bug: I understand that the AI races begin the game knowing where the yellow stars are instead of having to explore and find them. Is there a way to switch that off? It makes no sense to me, and it gives the aliens a big advantage.

Thanks,
RR

Ive had the Galactic Stock Exchange built for atleast a year now yet the Drengin complete one of their own (pop up window says they did)! Anyone else noticed any problems with "1 per galaxy" projects being built multiple times? Perhaps some projects are labeled wrong and are actually "1 per race"?

Overall im loving this game. I think moo1 had a special balance that no other game has touched. However my enjoyable addiction to GalCivs says alot for a genre which has been lacking quality releases.

Thanks much!

Vedric, happens more often with trade items, but yes, I've seen it happen with wonders. Haven't been able to tell whether or not I lost the advantage of the wonder when it happened though.

I have played the game 26 hrs, in the last 2 days(i had to squeeeze in an eight hr day work schedule ;) ) and just had my first and only CTD so far.

Here's the scenario.

Middle of game, went to the domestic policy screen. I was populist party. Clicked on war party and then clicked on details, just to see what it said. Clicked on done and it CTDed.

Found a little bug, I don't know if it's reported b4 yet :)
If you have all planets build 'nothing' and you select 'constructors' the apply button doesn't show up.

An easy work around is selecting any other ship then constructor, apply and then change that ship you chose in constructor.
