mouse cursor is hard to see

I have a problem where I can't easily see the mouse cursor. It flashes occasionally, as if it isn't being refreshed properly, but when the game is "thinking," the cursor appears just fine. Anyone have an idea of what's happening?

I have an AMD Athlon 950MHz CPU and an Nvidia GeForce TI4200 with driver 42.01.

Thanks!

bump because this problem makes it nearly unplayable... it is painful to have to guess where the cursor is...

Isn't the latest official Detonator release 41.09? That's what I'm using -- and what's available for download at nvidia.com -- and I have no problems with the mouse cursor. Anyhow, something to try.

YOu using the standard Windows mouse cursor?

GalCiv doesn't use its cursor, it uses the Windows mouse one. You may want to try changing it in the Control Panel.

I see this same problem on my couple of years old IBM ThinkPad. I use a standard Windows cursor, probably a hardware cursor. I also see some distortion in the graphics surrounding the (invisible) cursor some times. It's suspiciously similar to a driver/hardware problem.

I am using the standard mouse cursor. The drivers are beyond whql status. I would suspect quirky drivers, but they seem to work with everything else I have. Maybe it doesn't like DX9?

Yes, that's exactly how I would describe it. Grrr, maybe I should have participated in the beta program. :p :)

You know, I was just thinking that the problem also bears resemblance to what you see when your cursor moves over a window that is updating. Like, for example, when your cursor moves over a status bar, or the file move animation.

Has anything like this ever been mentioned in the beta testing? (bump)

Thanks

Bill,
I have a system very similar to yours but I don't have this problem. Beyond the suggestions made above, there are two places I would look.

1). Did you in stall the DirectX version 9 that came with the CD? If not, perhaps that will solve your problem. There were some problems discovered during the beta that were traced to levels of DirectX below version 8.0.

2). When loading the game, if you watch the opening movie cuts, are they relatively smooth (I still get one or two jerks in them but I have to watch closely to see them). If it jerks alot and the sound breaks off or quits completely for seconds at a time, then after your galaxy is created bring up the menu ("menu" button at the top center of the main screen or press the escape key) and check the options on the right side. For PC's like yours and mine the option "background loading" should be off. (This option is really for hyperthreading PCs.)

I have DX9 installed already, but I didn't get the CD, only the download. Interestingly enough, turning the background loading to "on" actually made it so the cursor is more visible. Not perfect, but at least I don't have to guess so much any more.

This is really weird...

Bill,

Do you by any chance have a Logitech mouse? I do, and I solved the invisible cursor problem by uninstalling the Logitech drivers and using the standard Windows wheelmouse driver.

Hope this helps ya.
