Pentium IV an absolute must?

Game requirements list a Pentium IV as a requirement. Is this an absolute requirement, or a recommended requirement? Point Blank... Will it run on a Pentium 2 MMX system (128 meg memory)?

It will probably run. It may not run great, particularly on larger maps, and the movies may be a bit jaggedy. You would definitely benefit from better equipment, but it shouldn't be impossible to play.

a Pentium 2 isn't quite the same league as an Athlon 1Ghz ;)

Since this game is using multiple threads for the AI, does the AI get 'smarter' when more CPU power is available?

The AI is as smart on a 1Ghz as on a 3.06HT PIV. The 3.06 will just the AI routines a "little" quicker ;)

The AI will always take all the time it needs irrespective of the system it is running on.

The game runs beautifully on my P4-mobile 2.0Ghz laptop (1GB DDR RAM). I never ever have to wait for the AI!

Works fine on my Pentium 2 400MHz system. Would not run larger galaxies on this though as it would be very slow.

Game runs fine on my Athlon XP 1700+ at 1.56Ghz. Its also got 512Mb DDR.

Still, runs really great. No choppy vid or anything.

It runs ok on my PII 350 with 128MB RAM, dual cpu mind you ;), just don't try to play the bigger maps.

I think people are just posting speeds to brag...in that case...I have a 1.8 Ghz processor and 254 megs of ram.

P4 3.06Ghz w/ 1GB RAM and it runs like a molasses-laden snail through a snowdrift.

Just kidding. :)

jaustin1,

You must be kidding.

Your "puny l'il system" couldn't possibly run it that quickly. ;)

Where does it say it requires a pentium iv?

Athlon 550, original GeForce, 256MB -- and no complaints as to performance. Runs perfectly...haven't tried the larger maps yet, though.

I have a 500 pentium III and the game runs fine. I can play on a large galaxy map, but my computer is probaly too slow for a huge or gigantic galaxy map.

I have an AMD K6-2 450 Compaq with 256 MB memory. It does okay on the smaller maps. I haven't tried anything large yet. The video is very choppy, however, I one time lost the sound after trying to run the windowed version and without the sound the video was smooth. I'm thinking that the video problems may have something to do with my cheap integrated ESS sound chip.

Video is choppy even on my Dual Athlon 2000 box with a Gig of Mem, but the game itself runs fine on both it and my laptop (Crusoe 866)

I haven't seen anywhere where it says a P4 is required.

I have a PII 400 and on small it runs alright I dont no about the larger maps. The SFX wave files will not work in the game, but work allright outside of the game??

running an amdathlon 1800 and a geforce 3 64mb and its works awesome apart from the game freezing one in about 8 hrs of gameplay

Running my first game with version 1.01 now. I think I've put in about 8 to 9 hours' worth of gameplay so far, my current save is in 2205 and I'm over halfway to a cultural victory (though I'm building two Terror Stars just in case some people are not completely convinced of the overwhelming yumminess of Earthlings' arts and crafts). My system is based on an Athlon 1.4Ghz with 512 MB RAM and a Radeon 9000 with 128 MB; gameplay is overall quite smooth although the pause between turns is beginning to get longer, doubtless that's because the other empires have a lot more ships to move around now.
