Newbie Q about money

Hi,
any small advice about money making please. It is my first game and I am on steady minus 500 paying Microsoft for two colonisation ships. :sniff!:

It's Mitrosoft my son. Lets not upset the lawyers (IANAL). ;)

The nice thing about GalCiv is that it recognizes a fact that very few games do: namely, the government can spend money MUCH faster than it makes it. That's why the default for gov't spending is at 50%. There are two basic ways to deal with this problem. (a) lower spending. (b) Sell stuff to other civs. Minor civs are great for selling stuff to since giving them military techs and ships makes it harder for the drengin to invade. And if you're 15 techs ahead, sell some techs to the other majors! After all, the UP might well force you to give up those techs for free. Obviously, be careful what you sell. And keep diplomatic bonus techs and trade goods, since those affect the price you get for your goods.

It took me a while to figure out how to avoid the -500 problem too. I was usually able to bail myself out using the spending option, but I also found it greatly helpful to form trade routes. This money comes in on top of everything else as pure profit and greatly enhanced my ability to bail myself out. As a result.. my standard start has included getting trade up asap. Conveniently, its on the same track as universal translator.

Definitely pay attention to trade, including trade-enhancing star bases. I blew the first half of my first game by waiting too long to start creating trade routes.

I like to go into the domestic policy screen, pull up trade, and pick the sector with the most trade routes going through it to drop in a fully trade-upgraded star base. Maybe more than one, since star bases have no maintenance cost :)

Leasing is handy sometimes but it's also an easy route to crippling the economy of the empire. Before committing to a lease be very sure of the benefit.
