"Here come the suns de-de-de-de!"

"Here come the suns de-de-de-de!"

Or, some thoughts in the role suns should play in-game

I'd like to start a discussion about the suns in SOASE. While they are an awesome centerpeice to the various solar systems, gateways to other parts of the galaxy, and make your capital ships feel all warm and fuzzy with an antimatter boost...somehow they feel..."short-changed" at the moment.

I feel that each sun should give different bonuses to ships in its proximity, as well as to the solar system as a whole.

Maybe blue suns give off energy that (if the shields are tuned right) boost shield effeciency, red suns perhaps could wind up damaging your ships if you hang out too long, yellow suns could do the antimatter boost, etc...etc...

As far as the solar system as a whole, I think that a sun has a lot to do with the development of what is actually IN a solar system to begin with. For example if your sun is an older sun which doesn't give as much light, you might find yourself with a lot of ice planets and such...or conversely with a red-hot giant sun you would have many volcano planets, etc...

Anyone else feel like I do? That these glories centerpeices of the solar systems need to be just that...centerpeices. Something that radiates out and has effect on everything around it.

It would make no sense for a star to give a shield bonus to ALL ships....what would be the strategy involved in that. Everybody's ships would be identical. What would be the point in having the bonus if it changes nothing.

Actually it would be better than you think. If a star gives a percentage based bonus to shields, than any ship that relies on shields rather than armor for defense would have a significant advantage. On the other hand, a star that say gives a shield penalty would benefit those relying on armor and hitpoints rather than shields. So really, it would have strategic value.

Also, shield bonus / penalties might be applied "over time"... they don't come into full effect untill you've been near the star for a minute or two. That could make for an interesting scenario!

Edit:

Also, if the devs ever insert any kind of shield damaging / piercing weapons, that'll also start to play around with the strategic balance.

eh? A dyson sphere would not fit into the current gravity well.

Not the habitable kind, no. But don't forget the idea originated as a way to utilize all the suns energy... place the satellites in a little (lot) closer and it could still work.

i like the solar flars idea and damage if sheilds go down but then other than looking prety and varying in size maybe affecting the weighting of planets in the solar system theres not much else you can do with them which wont be to over balanced or complty stupid.

Not trying to be picky, but what's with the red background in solar systems that have blue or white stars? Just throwing that out there.....

I agree, having each sun do something different is a WONDERFUL idea. I am not so sure about the suns effecting the types of planets as I am unsure ow that would be emulated. Perhaps they could just stick it into the in game map designer and have it put more of a certain type of planet.

Though I think the user has so much control over the planet types, it would be almost fruitless. That is just my opinion though, and I usually dont know much :)

Good post, I hope the idea gets used
