WWW Codecs link
Media center will play avi but first you have down load the codec packets you need.I
install home theater systems alot are PC based and this is common for media center. You don,t have to use the link I sent you but it should work and will steer you in the right direction .There are different ones if you are running Vista.
*Note:this is not convertion software ,this give your PC this info it needs to watch an avi. file!If I can be of any more assistance let me know!

Sorry important note alot of times in a codec pack (as in This one) a media player will be included When you install codecs and it prompts you Express Install or Advanced install select adv. install every thing but the player, Media center will still run the codecs.

Dunno if this multi format converter would be of any help/use WWW Link but thought it may be worth a try....according to the provided feature list it handles AVI files and will convert them to WMV as well as other formats.

You could try VLC Media Player - its an Open Source Project being done under a GNU. It will play AVI files direct. Its not a convertion tool, doesnt do many things others do, it just does one very well - Plays things. Feature wise it doesnt have a lot to hold up for it as its not commercially motivated (yet), so it concentrates on basic functionality not the "wow" factor, that shows in the remarkable number of formats it will play without hassle.

Not perfect of course, what is, but it has helped me out a lot over the years where the commercial ones could not. Worth a try, its free, so you will not loose anything by trying it. Its the "phpBB" equivelent of the media player world.

Sure you would have. But glad to help Ive run into it it several systems I don't know why they don't include more codecs in media center to begin with. They are always being added to but they should at least include all popular video formats!

Well if you need anything else let me know!
