OK I've got the same exact error when I purchased my copy from EB yesterday. I was dying to play the game and couldn't make it back to the store till today (I was quite upset I couldn't play last night *boo*) and I didn't post anything on the board or anything because I assumed it was a faulty disk.

Well I just got back from EB with my SECOND copy of the game now, and I'm getting the SAME ERROR during installation. It just stops around 10% done or so and pops up the "I/O error while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or corrupt installation file".

Now it seems kind of odd that I got TWO seperate faulty CD's? No one else has had this problem but Kyoshiro here? I'm hoping someone can respond to this. Thanks.

Can you try copying the CD to your hard drive and installing from there?

Ok it copied to the HD fine...tried to install it from there, but I got the same I/O error. This really sucks.

what if you do a chkdsk/scandisk of your harddrive? does that report any errors? Otherwise it seems to me that it's a broken installer. You should be able to download the entire game using the Stardock Central, available from the downloads page, but that may of course be a problem since it's kinda big. I suggest you contact [email protected], explaining your problems. It's more likely a Strategy First issue I guess but I dont have a good email to them...

I would have no problem downloading the game..(I do have a high speed connection) but I just paid $40 for the game from EB and I'm not about to pay another $40 or whatever to download it...the game looks very good, but I'm not about to spend $80 on it.

BTW Did a scandisk on each drive and no errors at all.

Yes, I had this problem also. Download the Stardock central file, follow the directions and get your updates that way. this worked for me, and I was getting the EXACT same errors when I tried to download the bonus pack directly. This alternative approach requires a few more steps such as an additional registration, but all future updates are going to require this method anyways.

Told tech support about my problem.. It's working now.
Hopes this helps you also. Thanks tech support.

You didn't by any chance have a previous beta version
of the game installed? If so, please make sure to
delete that prior to installing the release.

The error with the update is most likely the result of
a corrupted download somehow. The other main possibility
is that there is something leftover in your TEMP directories
that are unhappy, so I would suggest clearing those out.

http://scripting.stardock.com/private/sync_bp.zip contains
a copy of the BonusPak. Since it's in a zip file, you'll
know for certain the integrity was good on the download.

If the game crash error persists after installation, please
install http://www.stardock.com/temp/smartexception_galciv.exe,
run it, and crash the game. Email the debug.err from
the GalCiv directory and \program files\common
files\stardock\smartexception\galciv.exe.cra
to [email protected] please so we can track down what's
so unhappy.

If you are receiving an I/O error when trying to install from the Retail CD you should contact support from our publisher, Strategy First, at http://www.strategyfirst.com/en/support/.

But as a temporary work around to this problem you can use Stardock Central to download GalCiv.

I *already* bought this game (the retail version). I can only RETURN IT for another copy of the damn game. Now I'm supposed to pay $45 to download it? Or is there someway to download it for free because I have the retail version and CD Key ? (BTW the download is more expensive than the retail version in the stores...?)

I did email Strategy First Tech support. Sent it yesterday afternoon and have yet to get a response. I'm glad so many people are enjoying the game maybe someday I'll be able to play.
