choice of starting ships

Just wondering, is there a way to start the game without, or with ships other than, the default USS Hero and USS Discovery? Can they be modded to be replaced by other ships?

Yes because missions can make this possible and no because you can't do it in vanilla GC.

I see. So how can I go about getting this "mission"? Is it the same as an scenario? If so, I couldn't figure out how.
