What If Microsoft Bowed Out?

Just A Thought

Now I know that to some of you Microsoft is a bad word. And, to some it is the key to why computers are where they are at to this day. But, here is something to think about; what if Microsoft decided to close down the Operating System side of the house. In other words they would shut down “Windows” OS, but maintain the rest of the software and hardware divisions already in place. Now to ensure that the two present systems (Vista and XP) continue on they would agree to keep open a small portion of the Windows teams to ensure that all problems for the next three years would be covered, however they would no longer work on a new OS.

Now here are the questions:

Who would step up to fill this void, Apple or Linux?

Would IBM attempt to revise an early attempt at an OS?

Does Sun Micro Systems have an OS ready to put into place?

Is there possibly another OS in the works just looking for a place to land?

And, here is a question hopefully someone can answer:

Why hasn’t Apple released it's Mac OS to the general public?

If they did, how many of you would jump at the chance to use the Mac OS.

Just thinking,

Under your premise MS would still maintain/support Vista and XP, just not create any new OS. There really is no need for any of the other questions. Vista and XP would still be the dominate OS's out there on more computers then all the other alternatives combined. Even after three years, if it ain't broke why does it need to be fixed?

Now if your premise had MS going away completly, different story. Well maybe not, if MS goes completly away chances are they would sell the code, maybe even the rights to the name. Think about that, even if Apple brought the code, it would still be Windows.

First few years nothing will seriously change, due to business sticking with OS, but after that, I'm sure in least one OS will step in, and it may not be Mac OS or Linux. It's more likely one of those will get large share, but it's not 100% chance.

That said, I'm sure Wine would get a massive programmer support from ex-windows programmers in order to give Linux support for millions of old programs. But eventually it will die, with no new windows programs coming out.

Good question. I would run OS X if my Windows games would work on it...

As for the first question I think the PC world would be better off without MS. Windows XP is a great OS and maybe Vista will turn out to be as well but Microsoft's business practices are downright wrong.

And you think Windows is any easier for those that are PC illiterate? It is NOT...
Google GoS sometime. It's what comes on the low-end Wal-Mart computers. Talk about easy...

On topic - Linux.  Apple has shown it does not want to lose control of the hardware, and Dell and company are not going to sign their soul over to another company.

But in answer to Pigs and Buffalos flying - if Elephants can, why cant they?

and how many other companies around the world can the same be said of?
microsoft does not have a monopoly on that.

you dont see microsoft holding the world to ransom like opec did in the 70's.
you dont see microsoft dictating the prices of oil in the 90's like the big oil companies.
and i could go on.

maybe they have been guilty of some questionable business practices but they are by no means the worst out there.

I never said they were. I just said they have bad business practices.
