as a long time gamer who's played too many games ship before their time, it pleases me to no end to see a game that nailed it before it shipped. hell, you guys could have shipped this a month ago and it would have been more solid than most of the games's i've purchased in recent memory.

good job guys you really have a hit on your hands. strat game of the year? i think so.

Congratulations on impending Gold!

Unless it was a dream, I seem to recall a post stating that galciv would be available for purchase with a “download” delivery option, with a CD to be shipped later – or is this only for beta testers?

If purchase & download is the case – on what date to you expect that downloads (and purchases) will commence?

Some of us (non beta testers) are anxiously waiting to play the game for the first time.

Thanks.

"Galactic Civilizations Home Page: http://www.galciv.com

Release Date: March 26, 2003 (North America in most retail stores that carry PC games).

Availability Elsewhere: Sometime later, French, German, and Spanish versions should hopefully be available not too long after. You will also be able to purchase it directly from Stardock (www.galciv.com) where we'll ship it overseas for $10 and you'll be able to download it while waiting for it to arrive (i.e. have it immediately using Stardock Central)."

So the question is:

Can we prepay for GalCiv now and be able to download it NOW and have CD shipped after the 26th of March? Or is the dowload option available only after the 26th of March?

Congratulations on going Gold. :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT:

Asmodean shudders by the thought of such an immense undertaking having finally come to it's conclusion.

BTW, Brad: Do you still have the old developers reports from 2000 and 2001 available online?

They would be fun to read again, now that we are approaching release date??

Can't download until March 26th. Strategy First would have us flogged otherwise. ;)

re: "immense undertaking having finally come to it's conclusion"

Or new beginning. First game I've heard of that is guaranteeing at least a year of development (presumably with free upgrades) *after* it hits the stores. Personally I'm excited about a game that continues to improve as it's played by millions. ;)

While I'm bummed to have to wait another month to download it - from everything I've read, it certainly looks worth the wait. Congratulations.

Also - is a "search" function planned for the forums for when the great gaming hordes can get the game? I imagine that these forums will be getting a bit crowded. Forgive (and inform) me if there is already one - and I'm just missing it.

Thanks.

Has it really been over a year since the first ten non-stardock testers got the first Alpah build to test? I can't believe it. But what a fun ride its been.

We are lucky to have been on this ride, all of us from those that got on at the Alpha start to those that just boarded, and now the whole world is going to get a chance to enjoy the ride too.

"But, ... But Captain Solo, ..." (Oft said by C3PO just before the exitement realy got started.)

Jack,
I still have my original email inviting me to the Alpha. Nostalgia! How long did it take to get your name changed ;)

Congrats to the Galciv team!

Paul.

I am curious, would such a game be possible on OS/2 ?
(the new galciv that is, with same gfx, ai, etc)

OS/2 was the competitor of win95 and this new Galciv also runs under win95 I think.

Well done on a fine piece of work. All the long hard hours slaving at the keyboard have been worth it.

It's great to have seen the evolution of the game from the early Alphas to what it is today. It's a real credit to Brad and the whole development team.. something to be truly proud of.

The Obliterator,

OS2 was first introduced in the mid 1980's, about a decade before Win95 entered the scene. GC/OS2 shipped in 1994. Even win95 didn't have the features that OS2 did that would have permitted GC to be built for Windows. (I just checked on the Strategy First site and the minimum level of Windows needed for GC is Win98).

I don't think a straght port to OS/2 would work very well. I do think, if there was enough of a market, that all of the work done on GC/Win could have been done much easier on OS/2. But OS/2 always was more of a programmer's OS.

Oh no; Gold so soon and I still can't run the darn thing. Does anyone else have the problem where the opening window paints, but the menu buttons are not active?
