Music you listen to while playing

Since SDC does not have search ability, I can't find the old thread, so here I'll start a new one :)

I made a playlist last night and really enjoyed it. I used music from the following games:

Galciv (I used the 5 ambient songs + the intro song)
Age of Wonders 1 and 2
Fantasy General
Final Fantasy 5, 7, and 8
Space Empires 4
Spellcross
Ecco: Songs of Time

I picked enough songs for about 3 hours of music.
I used winLAME to re-encode some of my music that was either variable bitrate or above 160 bits.
I used MP3Gain to adjust the volume on all of the music so it was all the same so I would not get one loud song followed by a quiet song.

Thanks stardock for the built-in mp3 player. It works much better than winamp since it mutes at the right times (for events, etc).

The Planets, by Holst. Mars makes for wonderful war music IMHO

At the moment, I'm playing an evil empire. Of course, I'm listening to the classic evil empire music: The Imperial March, from the Star Wars soundtrack.

Dum-dum-dum dum-dumdum dum-dumdum

Last night I played listening to Ulver's Vargnatt and Bertgtatt albums. A fine combination of passion and chaos.

Star Trek II Music, but also the music from Emperor of the Fading Suns- I LOVE that stuff, very brooding stuff they included on the CD.

I go way off base in my playlist from Tannhauser to Norah Jones, the Dixie Chicks and Stevie Nicks. It's kinda funny conquering other races while listening to "Earl had to die..." I've always suspected the Yor have a little redneck in them... LOL

Last night, as I stayed up until midnight, utterly unable to stop myself from playing, it was Ulver's "Ten Years of the Machine", followed by Therion's "Lucid Dreaming".

Evanescence, "Fallen", at the moment, although I usually just toss together a playlist of my favourite MP3s before a session. Sometimes I use instrumental stuff, which is very atmospheric, sometimes just pop music and the like.

Twin Peaks, Bladerunner and LOTR music are all good for background, I usually just run WinAmp and task-switch to change music.

The Braveheart soundtrack sounds surprisingly fitting.

I also am quite fond of playing African music, such as Ladysmith Black Mombazo.

Perhaps a touch off topic, but what format is the playlist supposed to be in? When I load a playlist, I see the title s of the song flash by, but obviously there's no music.

Metal usually. Strapping Young Lad, Slayer, etc.

Lighter stuff sometimes too, such as the Star Wars evil empire theme, the Conan and Excalibur soundtracks, The Gathering (the "how to measure a planet" album is often fitting), classical, etc. But mostly metal. Anotehr great game soundtrack is the Total Annihilation soundtrack.
