Odd A.I warfare

In my current game the Altarians suddenly declared war with me. At that point I did not have any military at all and thought the game was over...but then instead of invading or anything, the Altarians just kept on sending those Constructors and freighters along our borders witch I wiped out with a few corvettes.
They also tried to send a few lonely transporters (whitout any military escort) straight through my
territory toward some unknown destination.

Turn after turn this just continued with me slowly building up my strenght. Then, when I already had a formidable army, the Drengin empire declared war with me because the loved my "skin" or something similar.
I realised a two-front war would be disasterous and
proposed a peace treaty to the Altarians - an offer
they instantly accepted. I then changed the course of my
military ships to guard my planets close to the Drengins. 2 Turns later the Drengins suddenly contacted me again and was growelling for peace!! The offered me everything they had - all techs (5 of them in all), 100 gold for 20 turns and all of their influence points (some thousand) This happened despite the fact that the Drengin was military superrior to me and not a bullet yet had been fired during that 2-turns-long war.

After a few days of playing the game, it seems to me that while the A.I generaly does a good job, the military A.I is VERY odd at times.
Anyone agreeing?

Maybe - and I'm only assuming this - your ability to raise a whole army (e.g. your military curve increased very very fast) quite of shocked your foes? You had nothing, next turn you had a fleet. So they calculated, if this goes on, we're chili.
