Excalibur not completely building? Read this!

Ok, we've figured out what's causing the problem with Excaliburs not building. There was a discrepancy between the xml files for the cd install and the sdc update installs that caused the graphic file to get deleted. So you can get the file by uninstalling and re-installing the bonus pack.

Sorry Cari,
this doesn't work for me. I've just uninstalled the bonus pack and tried reinstalling. No joy. Still fails at the same location and now I don't have the bonus pack installed!

Cari,
I've done a complete re-install. I deleted galciv. Deleted stardock central. Regedited every mention of stardock and delected them. Reinstalled GAlciv from CD. Ran the patch for the bonus pack. reinstalled Stardock central and updated the bonus pack.

All worked!!

Unfortunately my galciv shows as version 1.01.029 with version 1.02.042 available. If I try to install it then starts downloading ALL 86+ MB!!! Same thing with the multimedia pack. version 1.0.004 installed, 1.0.006 available. 366 MB download!

Cari,

I see that 1.02.042 adds an excalibur.mdl file... should the data file excalibur.ship be updated also???

I.E.

//----------------
SHIP Excalibur
//----------------

Name "Excalibur"
Model "Ship14"

* should be Model "Excalibur"?

or no leave it at Ship14?

and/or does tech file need to be changed?

Thanks!

Nope. The only reason that excalibur.mdl was updated was because some peoples were deleted.

Solitair: The 86+ MB download plus the 366 MB multimedia download happens when you install GalCiv first, then SDC. I hate to tell you this, but to avoid the huge download, you need to install SDC first, GalCiv second. :(

Also, the huge multimedia download will never complete. You'll get an error message as it tries to unpack some of the files.

So what's the bottom line here? What do I need to do to fix this, should I just wait for another patch? I've usually won or lost the game before excaliburs are available, so I'm not too worried about it, but it would be fun to build one at some point.

To fix which?

To fix the excalibur. It cant be built! It doesnt display a picture of the ship, and building reaches 'next turn' and gets stuck at that indefinately.

Does it still get stuck, or did the aforementioned patch replace the missing file?

I'm afraid I have no idea.

It's in 1.02.49 perfectly so the only think I can assume is that som epeople are using older versions where the SDC issue sync problem.

Erm ok, well everything seems uptodate on my end, ive installed and reinstalled the game 3 times, with all sorts of combinations like SDC first, game second or vice versa, and excalibur still cant be built properly. Any suggestions what else i can try?

I just went through and tested this- I can build Excaliburs in 1.02.049. Took a heck of a long time to get to the technology (how do you guys do that without not already winning unless you're going for a tech victory), but it works.

I just finished a huge galaxy game in which I went for "Beyond Human" (seriously, the culture victory would've taken longer). ANYway, the Excaliburs built just fine, and blew up lots of Arcean ships.

Some thoughts on Excaliburs.

1) Dont get me wrong. I am very happy the Excaliburs are back (Brad once said he disliked that name). Are Excaliburs worth the 3000 cost? Wont it take at least 20 turns to build just 1?

2) I remember some late game tech says we could built very powerful but cheap ships. They used to be the Battlestars (I remember their cost and maintence: : 100 shields and 1 credit). Where are the Battlestars?

3) According to Javascott's flowchart, by the time you start building Excaliburs, you are only 5 techs away from a tech victory. What's the point of building these expensive ships in a huge or gigantic galaxy?

note: my current gigantic game, I'm 57% to a military victory and the most powerful ships is the Dreadnought. I dont think I'll see Excaliburs or Overlords in this game.

Are they worth the cost? Are you seriously asking this?

Ramp military production to 100% for about 5 turns and you'll have an unstoppable force.

That one excalibur took on all those ships and won. I set it for auto-attack. The other 20 ended up wiping out 2 whole civs without a loss.

What if you turn off tech victory? Or what if you just want the joy and satisfaction of opening up a huge can of whoop-ass on everyone! And I mean everrrrrryone. Pretty much whoever gets them first wins the late game.

Indeed.

I pretty much had my pick of cultural, tech, or conquest victories when I had Excaliburs built. The main reason I went for tech was that I didn't want to bother with building a pile of transports.

Hi guys,

Kinda new at this..have the retail version...Updated with Bonus pack, but couldn't determine what version I was playing...so I installed SDC...It stated I had an older verison...so I installed the 86Meg update....Now I see these multimedia folder..but I'm wondering if it will work...Do I need to punt and start this all over? If so can someone post an install guide for sub-human intelligences... :)
Step 1...Open fridge and get refreshment of choice....
Step 2...start install of SDC or GalCiv..Or Bonus packs..Or multimedia?
Step 3...Go back to kitchen and close fridge door..

"Are Excaliburs worth the 3000 cost? Wont it take at least 20 turns to build just 1? "

Yes. They're killing machines. Basically a bunch of guns with wings and a rocket strapped on. I had a single planet craking them out every other turn. Others it took maybe 4 or 5 turns. Of course I found out I only needed one..

Oddly enough, I've got the mdl and ship file, and the Excalibur finishes building, but I don't get a picture while it is building, and when it is done, it's invisible.
