The reason why I hate Altarians so much....

So I was allied with these guys...I tweaked the AI so no one was all evil, only all good to neutral, and I was hoping for a high competitive game on research, trade social, etc...and less bone cracking, face bursting warfare....so after a few moths the blue bastards like my way of life and we get allied. And all the hell breaks loose. First they declare war on a small race I was in good terms with...no problem, i say...small race, let's get'em and let's be over with.

But noooooo....a couple of months after that they get pissed at the green-tube-nosed fellows...wich I was allied with...I had to choose...and damn it I had to choose the blue-tatooe coz I was trading a lot with'em...

And the rest is history...over a period of 26 months, the blue-bloody-bastards declared war on every race on the map...and when they finally were all gone, and I wwas hoping I get to scrap all those battleships and get some research done, the stupid Altarians declare war on me...ON ME !!! THEIR BEST BUDDY ! who helped'em during those stupid wars they started...coz they were too weak and without my help they were almost extinc a couple of times...

THAT'S IT ! i'm never allying with them again !

I dunno, but those sneaky bastards are a LOT more evil than the Dregins...only that they don't show it...and that's even more scary. At least with the dregin I know where i'm standing. Waddever I do , they want to eat my skin...as for the altarians...you may never know...one moment they're selling you movies, the next moment, you're admiring blue dreadnaughts ripping your empire to tiny ribbons...

Apparently even the goodie goodies aren't averse to extorting a weaker race or hitting a guy when they're down. But then again, what do you expect from a galaxy where wiping out some sea animals is considered more evil than wiping out a whole colony of an enemy race. :)

yes, but the nasty stuff is that I wasn't evil...I really wanted to remain allied with them and I choosed only good options...so them, declaring war on me was really stupid...

I agree that a tweak might be in order. I mean, what is a GOOD alignment for if the Altarians are constantly trying to dominate the galaxy militarily. I've certainly experienced the "good" Altarians being bullies in my games even though I'm good.

Yes, I've seen it too - and not only the Altarians, but the Torians as well. Apparently, power corrupts - everyone becomes a bully when they *can*.

I've never had this happen, and I've sided with the Altarians in plenty of games. Seems to me that the big advantage to being "good" is that you'll have a friend in them if you rated at least good, especially if Saintly. It does irk me that even when allied that they refuse to trade military technology to me at ALL; They will turn down 4 or 5 good techs for one military tech.

Even better is when they'll refuse multiple planets for some techs :)

Keep in mind that Evilness/Goodness is NOT linked to behavior except to the extent that it is a factor in who a given race will declare war on, all other things being equal. A race can be 100% good and declare war at the drop of a hat, while an evil race might never declare war on anybody. The difference in military abilities is, I think, usually a lot more significant factor in war decisions. There are probably trade factors as well (I really need to read the manual someday--this is all probably explained there).

A couple of people (including me) made some hay about the lack of linkage between morality and willingness to declare war and the general blood-thirstiness of the AIs back during the beta phase but Stardock (Brad really, I guess) have stuck to mostly keeping those separate (and I can understand, once having settled on the degree of interaction among various game factors, it is easier to make suggestions to screw with that than it is to implement them). On the other hand, it seems as if the blood-thirstiness has gradually been reduced since the beta phases, though I haven't played a game without war (at least among other major races) yet, though the "peaceful path" messages are a good sign.

There should be an option for morality and war for each race when starting the game. That would throw a bunch of new possibilities in the mix. It would be great to be able to make a race Pure Good and Pacificts, or Chaotic Evil Treehuggers, or Neutral and Bloodthirsty.

If they were your allies, why didn't the last war before the one with you end the game?

Wow...hehe! I LOVE the altarians; they play exactly like I would have played against you LOL

Well...no need for multiplayer I guess!

And: I almost forgot: The AI always tries to WIN the game. It doesn't matter how 'good' they are, they still want to win. They chose the right path to victory; does that need an AI tweak? If I were playing a good race, I would first trade with some empires an ally with someone; attack or 'culture' the others and eventually even attack my ally if that was the victory condition.

That would be kinda cool actually!

The difference between the Altarians and the Drengin is that the Altarians only extort money for "peacekeeping" purposes.

Make the Altairians evil sometime. :)

I made them Pure Evil (I seriously think they look it), Drengins Chao Evil, Yor Neutral, Arceans Chao Good and Torians Pure Good.. It works better this way and I renamed Altarians the Draco Vexa
