Autopilot

Ive started playing with the autoturn off and with bigger maps than before, and suddenly Ive noticed (several times) ships on autopilot that dont move on turn.

ughgh...I guess I'm going to have to start playing without autoturn more often...

Fredrik,

Ships being placed on autopilot move immediately, then on subsequent turns do not move until you press the turn button. Is this
what you saw? Or were the ships that did not move put on autopilot during a previous turn?

While changing the movement of ships on autopilot from the start to the end of a turn has eliminated some problems I think some
confusion could be removed by changing their movement to the middle of the turn (If any ships are on manual control, have the
player move at least one, but not all of them before moving those on autopilot). I know this is more complicated but the
elimination of this confusion should improve playability.

Cheers,
Jack

I agree that it looks like it's skipping a turn when I put it ships on autopilot with autoturn to off, but in this case it's ships set on previous turns that's "stuck" in space, even tho the autopilot-msg is set under the ship. They dont move at all until I select the ship and set it on autopilot again. Time is no matter, Ive waited about 15 turns while the ship just sits there.

This has happened to me as well, same problem, often I had to move the ship manually a few spaces, then it would respond to autopilot correctly.

I just now tried to reproduce this and this was what I found. I moved a ship first, then turned off auto turn because I'd forgotten, then moved my other ship. They completed their first turn correctly, then I hit the turn button and they did not move. When I hit it the second time, they moved again. This also happened with just one ship after I had my colony ship colonize a planet. So I don't know why mine would only skip moving one turn, when yours would be stuck there indefinitely, unless whatever is causing it has been changed between our builds...but fixing just the one turn pause should fix your problems, too...

Actually...now that I've thought about it and stepped through the process, I'm not sure that mine isn't behaving correctly...If it's July and I set my ship on auto-pilot, he moves. That's his move for this turn. So now I click the turn button (not currently having any other ships to mess with) and he stays put, retaining his moves and it's now August. I hit the button again and he moves using his August moves and now it's September and he has new moves again. It's confusing because the ships are actually moving at the end of a turn, whereas they move immediately when you put them on auto-pilot. So it seems like your ship is moving a turn, but if the ships actually moved at the beginning of a turn, you wouldn't be able to take them off auto-pilot that turn, change their direction, etc.

But none of this resolves why Fredrik and Cain are having ships get stuck...

if they're clicking in unexplored territory they might not be moving because they are clicking on a system

And they still go onto autopilot? Fredrik, what kind of ships are you talking about?

The colonyship for sure. Others...hmmm, dont remember.

Hmm, Reaver - so If I click on an unexplored territory, accidently hitting a system own by another race, does that make the ship move at least once and then stop? (with autopilot on all the time)

Altho...I doubt that I hit a system...if so, it's very bad luck to do it so often...so much space, so few systems :)

Well, it's possible, but hard to tell...try clearing out a space with a scout or survey ship and then use autopilot for your colony ship and see if you get better results...

Mm well, that's what I do most of the time. I seldom go exploring with my colony ship. But it has happened more than it should. I'll keep my eyes open for next time tho.

it might do the same thing with anomalies, only my survey ships moves then.
It might also be ships but i don't know about that as by the time i've gone by that area the ship will have moved.

I've confirmed that it can happen when you try to send a colony ship to a star that is in
unexplored space. I started a game and the first thing I did was to try to line up my screen
so that a star in an unexplored sector with stars showing in the minimap was as centered as I
could get it, then used my mouse to try to send the colony ship to that spot. My alignment
efforts were good. The colony ship went on autopilot and did not move at all. Then I used the
scout to explore the area to which I sent the colony ship and verified that I had succeded in
aiming the colony ship at a star. Even after exploring that space the colony ship did not move,
not even for several more turns. Then I selected the colony ship and sent it again to the same,
now explored, star and the colony ship moved as it should.

I did not try anomolies or enemy ships (how could I?). I wonder what happens if you try to send
a colony ship (or any ship other than a survey ship) to an anomoly in explored space. Also, how
about enemy ships? I suspect the behaviour will be different, so that is what I am going to
check next.

Jack

ive tried sending scouts to anomalies, it just comes up with a message 'only survey ships can survey an anomalie' or something like that
