AIs give in too easily to extortion and threats of war without accounting for distance

The Torians started out at a great position in my current game, and their lead is widening as they continue to extort other races for cash. The funny thing is, the Torians are also 6 sectors away from their closest neighbors, and there's no chance they can actually carry out their threat of war less than 40 turns into the game. Can the AI be adjusted so it looks at more than the military power graph when trying to extort others or react to extortions?

It would be nice if the AIs didn't start the game with the ability to contact anyone but the human player as well.

Your first point is a good one. I had one game on a Huge map where the Drengin were absolutely monstrous and kept threatening, declaring war on me, and were just generally hopping mad with me. But they couldn't even reach my planets with their current ship ranges so I kept giving them the big rasberry :)

Your second point makes less sense given the backstory and also given the balance that the UP only takes place with human contacted races. But, I'm not even sure they can contact one another, but if they can, so they trade a few techs here and there, big deal. Why would them making contact with *you* suddenly magically make it possible/ok for them to talk to one another but not before?

Reaching you is a simple matter of planting a starbase to extend their range. Has anyone seen the AI do that?

Maybe a slider where you can set AI agressiveness along with all the options you get when you start the game.
Possibly making the slider random if you check a box and that AI agressiveness changes once in a while if you check another box.

That would complete the setup screen :)

Many times - but any starbase that would let them reach me was easily taken out (I'd built quite a network of them while the Drengin were busy sharpening their spears and bullying). Now, they could have done something like send an invasion fleet out with the constructor and I might have been in trouble, but that is definitely beyond the AI, at least at that difficulty.

I don't think we're talking about the same thing regarding free contacts for the AI LOL
