Dreadnaughts killing my Avatars?

I'm very confused. I'm playing a large game, and the Yor empire has these Dreadnaughts that are 91/30/19 in strength.

My Avatar (the next capital ship) is 78/25/16, and it's built at a planet with everything maxed. Hell, my Dreadnaughts are 65/34/14. Avatars don't seem to be much more than Dreadnaughts...

What on earth am I missing here? These guys are annihilating me...

No clue. Maybe the Yor are reaping the advantages of the random event which causes an alien race to "increase in power each turn" or something like that?

Well this is BS - ONE of their dreadnaughts just took out a MAXED starbase (defense) without being destroyed. I mean, what the hell?

This needs to be looked into. My game is pretty much over, and there's no good reason for it... These guys are annihilating me like I'm nothing... Not too happy - especially since I don't understand it...

Oh, and the dreadnaught had 32/91 hits when it attacked. After it destroyed my maxed starbase of 130/130 hits, it had 25/91 hits.

Ummm... WTF?

The AI probably has a hit point bonus from the war party, tech bonuses, and probably a upgraded military resource starbase.

If you want to see what stats they have you'll have to spend money on espionage.

Those number are kind of funky, the only thing i can figure is that you both picked up a lot of anomolies to skew them, and perhaps the Yor have the war political party.

As for the Starbase, what was it's defense? A lot of hit points won't do you much good unless you have the attack/defense to back it up, without it the Starbase will just be able to lose more rounds of combat before it dies which doesn't do you much good.

I did a check and they have 150% weapons/defense, and many other mods - WAY higher than mine.

But I still think there's a serious issue when a single dreadnaught can take out a maxed defense starbase. That's just very unrealistic...

Theres a battle simulator here http://www.galciv.com/metaverse/simulator.asp that you can use to simulate battle outcomes.

As for a single dreadnaught taking out a starbase, it can happen and you need to watch that. Best thing to do would be to garrison ships there and wait until you get more defensive modules researched.

Also, maxed starbase for what tech? I mean, there's some defensive modules that can make a starbase a terror for dreadnoughts...but that may be beyond what you have available.

I think the max was Avatar killer.

Regardless, I had to quit the game - there was no way in hell I could win. The empire teamed up with the most powerful 'group' in the game, which was the I-League, so I could never use espionage, etc.

Overall, I experienced massively strange behavior during the game. One moment I'd have great income, the next I was in the hole -1000bcs a turn. I teamed up with 2 other empires to try and defeat the main empire, and even after giving them every piece of tech I had, they were taken out, so the comp annihilated 3 empires teamed together.

Difficulty was Normal.

IMO Their dreadnaughts are so powerful because they have at least one (probably more) military resource. These increase the strength of your ships to ungodly proportions.

As far as income goes. When you drop below -500bc all of your income goes into getting out of debt. Once out, it goes back to soc/mil/tech spending putting you back into debt. Unless you adjust your spending your economy will be very erratic.

MoogyMonster,
you need to pay a bit more attention to the Attack and Defense values and less to the Hit points. A ship with a high attack value can destroy ships with low attack and defense values without taking much damage. When a ship attacks, its attack value is applied against the enemy ships defense value and damage is applied to the defending ship (with some random modifications). Then the defending ship uses it's attack value (or defense value if higher, I think) and applies this against your defense value applying damage to your ship.

High Hit Points are good but no use if the the enemy ships are too powerful. Look for enemy military resoure starbases and destroy them! The enemy ships with then reduce in power. Also build all military resource improvements on any military starbases you control.

Paul.

'That's just very unrealistic..'
Did you meet a dreadnought commander recently? :P
Maxed starbase have overlord killer mark II on them, which are hard to destroy but not impossible.
The most probable thing is the Yor have several military resources with juicy starbases on top. Plus they may have more techs than you that increase attack/damage, but that's account for at most 10% lat ein the game?

Heh...yeah, I got a kick out of the "unrealistic" bit too. Because we do have a whole history of dreadnaughts attacking starbases to compare to after all.

Quit the game...Unnecessary. THIS is the stuff GalCiv masters are msde of my friend.

Ok, so the Yor were kicking your ass...sue for peace. Offer them money, tech...even a planet. Even a poor planet will usually buy you at least a temporary peace.

Then find some other AI on his border and bribe them into attacking the Yor for you. That will give the Yor something to do. Send out some scouts...it is obvious that the Yor has a military starbase or two somewhere. If he loses those you'll cut him down to size in a hurry. If you're playing on normal level or less you can probably just BUY the damn think from him (AI are still pretty stupid about such things at lower level). Then it will be YOU who has the base.

Alternatively send a bunch of your best warships along with a constructor adjacent to his starbase. As many as you can spare to do the job. Then, if the Yor attack you again, blast the base to smithereens and grab it for yourself.

Better yet. GIVE the ships to whatever power you bribed to attack the Yor. Yes...give away military equipment...it works. The major powers of Earth have been doing it for years.

See what happens is the AI will accept these ships (and likely be willing to cough up some nice $$ for them). They will then look around for something to attack with them...and lo and behold there's a nice Yor Starbase here. Boom. Starbase gone...and you didn't do it so the Yor don't hate you. You then claim it with your constructor. And you're in business.

Had to quit the game? No offense, but it sounds to me like you didn't try very hard. If your only strategy is to slug it out with them toe to toe, you ain't playing right.

BTW: NEVER leave a starbase undefended. They aren't designed to protect themselves against real enemies. Hell, at the very least stick a bunch of Combat Transports on them, they have pretty good Defense for the money and you'll be pumping out alot of them any way to deal with population problems.

Starbase by itself with hostile enemies nearby is a bad idea.

Your AVATARS are A25/D16 ?? This means you have Weapons and Defense at +25%-30% approx ... That's VERY weak for this stage of game, you should have more than +60% !
But you say your Dreads are A34/D14, much more than your Avatar, and this imply Weapons >+200%, so I'm not sure of your figures...
Didn't you look at a "parked" Dread in orbit over a system with additional "defense" bonus ?
Or is your dread very recent and/or high level, and your Avatar old/low level ? Unclear... :notsure: :notsure:

And alos, I've seen Dreads with more than 150hp relatively soon (say year 2200 on), Yours/Yors aren't so impressive ... :p

I had a game where a minor race had super powerful ships in general that I could not compete with. Even though I was slightly ahead in technology. I read some place that the battle calculations are based on what tech level and luck you have at the time. Not to much about extremely different offensive capabilities. True you can it seems buy your way out of every single war. Keep in mind though that the race may not keep the peace. I paid the Altarians 5000 BC once to end the war against me I was being slaughtered. He agreed and the very next turn he attacked without warning calling me a evil race. I was not evil really, I was near the neutral point. Not sure how that effects things. :)

On the starbase being destroyed to easily issue:

Yes, a starbase can hold off Corvettes and Frigates, but then as the ships get more powerful, the power of the starbase doesn't increase at the same speed.

You need to GARRISON your starbases. Stick a Battlehammer on them. Built Battle Stations for them to make the Battlehammer more powerful.

I find that building the defensive improvements are a waste. The best way to defend your starbase is with offensive improvements and Battlehammers.

I think you guys misunderstood, I quit that particular game and started a new one.

The Yor and I-League were about to annihilate the 2 remaining empires, so the 'use the other guy' techniques wouldn't do much, since my ships could never stand up to the enemy.

The problem was early in the game, my income/expenditures was messed up big time - I could only do 25% taxes and 10-15% government expenditures. This allowed my civ to fall WAY behind.

The game I'm playing now, I've taken what I learned in the last one and I'm dominating - so that's what's important.

I didn't quit GalCiv, I just quit the last game and moved on to a new one :)
